Mecum Houston 2024 Collector Car Auction Garners $29.4 Million With Impressive Sell-Through

The recent Mecum auction in Houston, held at the NRG Center from April 4-6, 2023, showcased an impressive array of classic and collector vehicles, living up to Texas's reputation for doing things on a grand scale. With a lineup of 1,023 vehicles, the event saw 730 cars sold, achieving a sell-through rate of over 71% and generating sales totaling $29.4 million. The auction highlighted a strong preference for pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles among buyers. However, modern muscle cars alongside a selection of both vintage and contemporary sports cars took center stage in terms of top-dollar sales.

Leading the pack was a 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster (Lot S119.1), fetching $357,500. It was closely followed by one of five 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170s (Lot S323), which sold for $242,000. These vehicles, presented in nearly new condition with very low mileage, showcased an impressive range of finishes including Plum Crazy and Sublime to Destroyer Gray. Other notable sales included a 2005 Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster (Lot S219) and a 1960 Chevrolet Corvette Custom Convertible (Lot S157), which sold for $209,000 and $181,500 respectively.

From The Bob Cather Classics Collection, a rare 1983 Duesenberg II Royalton Dual Cowl Phaeton (Lot S89), one of just 71 built by Elite Heritage Motors from 1977 to 2011, also made headlines with a sale price of $154,000. The Plendl Brothers Bowtie Classics collection contributed to the event's success with notable sales including a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle LS6 (Lot F59) and a 1972 Chevrolet K5 Blazer Cheyenne (Lot F60), fetching $100,100 and $88,000 respectively.
