Massachusetts Leaders Rally For Prostate Cancer Awareness And Equity

The 15th Annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Day, a pivotal event in the fight against prostate cancer, is scheduled for Thursday, March 28, 2024. This virtual gathering, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is organized by the AdMeTech Foundation in collaboration with the Prostate Cancer Action Council. It aims to unite key figures in medicine, advocacy, and community leadership to address prostate cancer's impact and advancements in its management.

Senate President Pro Tempore William Brownsberger and Representative Gerry Cassidy are set to host the event, with Faina Shtern, M.D., President of AdMeTech Foundation, and Thomas Satham, Director of Operations and Health Policy, leading as Masters of Ceremony. The day will also see participation from Governor Maura Healey, Senate President Karen Spilka, Speaker of the House Ronald Mariano among other elected officials. The event will pay tribute to the late Representative Stephen Kulik and Mr. Naakh Vysoky, both of whom were prostate cancer survivors and advocates.

MA Fights Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer stands as the most prevalent male malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men. It notably presents a significant health disparity, especially affecting Black men at a higher mortality rate than their White counterparts. The event aims to highlight prostate cancer as a critical public health issue that demands attention across all demographics, with a particular focus on communities with Black, Hispanic, and Latino heritage.

Advancements and Equity in Care

Discussions will revolve around the disease's impact on individuals and communities, with experts presenting the latest in clinical care and research aimed at enhancing survival rates and minimizing health disparities. A notable initiative is the invitation for Massachusetts men aged 40 and above to join the Prostate Cancer Equity Program. This program seeks to offer expedited access to advanced care and support, targeting Black, Hispanic, and Latino men specifically. It garners support from Massachusetts’ NAACP Branches and the Latino Health Insurance Program among others.

A Decade of Awareness and Action

Since its inception in 2011, the Annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Day has been crucial in establishing prostate cancer as a significant public health concern while addressing the disparities associated with it. Massachusetts has emerged as a frontrunner in promoting public awareness, medical education, research, and efforts to reduce health disparities through this state-wide prostate cancer program.

Supporting Organizations

The event is backed by notable sponsors including Lantheus, Astellas, Blue Earth Diagnostics, and Johnson & Johnson. These collaborations underscore the collective effort towards combating prostate cancer and improving patient outcomes.

The upcoming virtual event not only aims to continue raising awareness about prostate cancer but also to foster discussions on improving care standards and reducing disparities within affected communities. By bringing together leaders from various sectors, it reaffirms the commitment towards making prostate cancer a public health priority that requires collective action.
