Over 1 Million Choose Lufthansa's Green Fares For Sustainable Travel In First Year

One year on from the launch of the Lufthansa Group's Green Fares, a significant milestone has been reached with over one million passengers opting for this sustainable travel choice. This innovative fare option, which aims to reduce the carbon footprint of air travel, has seen an uptake of three percent across all passengers, with a notable eleven percent in Business Class bookings. The routes where Green Fares have been most popular include Hamburg-Munich, Zurich-London, and Frankfurt-Berlin. The demand for these eco-friendly tickets is on an upward trajectory across all booking classes.

Since its inception, the Green Fares initiative has contributed to offsetting more than 77,000 tonnes of CO2. This figure is equivalent to the emissions generated by over 12,000 flights between Hamburg and Munich. The Lufthansa Group offers Green Fares on more than 730,000 flights annually within Europe and to select destinations in North Africa, including Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Furthermore, since November 2023, the initiative has been extended to include selected long-haul routes.

1M+ Opt for Lufthansa Green Fares

The core of the Green Fares program lies in its dual approach to carbon offsetting. It combines the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which reduces CO2 emissions by 20 percent, with contributions to climate protection projects that compensate for the remaining emissions. The Lufthansa Group commits to integrating the required SAF amount into airport infrastructure within six months of purchase. Its CO2 compensation portfolio includes 15 diverse projects focusing on innovative technologies like Carbon Cure's Sustainable Concrete and Biochar.

Currently, around four percent of Lufthansa Group passengers are engaging with offers for more sustainable flying options, including Green Fares. The company provides a variety of ways for passengers to offset their CO2 emissions throughout their travel journey. Beyond Green Fares, passengers can select offers with a higher proportion of SAF at the booking stage or choose to offset their emissions during or after their flight. In 2023 alone, over 1,500 companies globally have invested in SAF through partnerships with the Lufthansa Group.

The Lufthansa Group is committed to achieving ambitious climate protection targets. It aims for a neutral CO2 balance by 2050 and plans to halve its net CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. Strategies include fleet modernization, optimizing flight operations, increasing the use of SAF, and providing sustainable travel options for passengers and corporate clients. Additionally, the Group contributes to global climate and weather research and has been recognized for its sustainability efforts with a top "A-" rating in the CDP climate ranking for its effective CO2 reduction strategy.
