Renault CEO Luca De Meo Advocates For A Sustainable European Automotive Industry
Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo has recently shared his comprehensive vision for the future of the European automotive industry through an open letter addressed to political leaders across the continent. With the European elections looming, de Meo's timely communication underscores the urgent need for a collective European effort to navigate the automotive industry's energy transition successfully.
De Meo's letter is not merely a call to action but a detailed blueprint aimed at fostering a sustainable, inclusive, and competitive automotive sector in Europe. He emphasizes the critical juncture at which the industry stands, poised for an industrial renewal through enhanced inter-sectoral cooperation and ambitious public-private partnerships. Drawing inspiration from the success of Airbus, de Meo advocates for increased collaborative initiatives to rejuvenate the European automotive industry.

The Renault Group CEO highlights the current challenges faced by the European automotive sector, notably its struggle against unbalanced competition. He points out the differing approaches of global powers: "The Americans stimulate, the Chinese plan, the Europeans regulate." To counteract this imbalance, de Meo proposes a hybrid model that combines stimulation and planning underpinned by strategic regulation.
Among his key recommendations are the involvement of Europe's 200 largest cities in decarbonisation efforts, the creation of an "industrial Champions League" to acknowledge and reward entities committed to ecological transition, and the establishment of "green economic zones" focused on energy transition investments and subsidies.
De Meo's vision extends beyond the automotive sector, with proposals for ten major European projects that address broader issues such as revolutionising last-mile delivery, developing charging infrastructures and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology, and enhancing Europe's competitiveness in semiconductors.
Concluding his letter, de Meo calls upon political decision-makers, town councillors, European citizens, NGOs, and stakeholders in energy, software, and digital sectors to unite in creating a new mobility ecosystem in Europe. His message is clear: the ecological transition requires teamwork, and with concerted effort, the European automotive industry can lead the way in addressing continental challenges.
Renault has long been at the forefront of mobility innovation and electric vehicle development in Europe. Under its strategic 'Renaulution' plan, the company is committed to transforming its offerings into a more competitive, balanced, and electrified range. This ambition reflects Renault's goal to be a leader in modernity and innovation across technology, energy, and mobility services both within and beyond the automotive industry.
