LifeWorks Welcomes New CEO Liz Schoenfeld, Ph.D., To Helm Leadership

LifeWorks has announced the appointment of Liz Schoenfeld, Ph.D., as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective July 1, 2024. Liz will succeed Susan McDowell, who has led the organization for nearly three decades and will step down at the end of June 2024.

Susan McDowell, one of the original founders of LifeWorks, has been a pivotal figure in the organisation's history. Over her 29-year tenure, she has overseen services for over 100,000 clients and established LifeWorks as a national example in addressing youth homelessness.

LifeWorks Announces New CEO

Under Susan's leadership, LifeWorks has strengthened its programs in housing, counselling, and education. Her dedication has been instrumental in advocating for youth in Austin, ensuring they have a place to call home, opportunities to heal, and chances to work.

The LifeWorks Board of Governors selected Liz Schoenfeld after an extensive national search led by Board Chair Kyle Ali and Vice Chair Lisa Richardson. Liz has been with LifeWorks for over a decade, most recently serving as the Chief Research & Evaluation Officer.

Liz's contributions to strategic planning, donor relations, and program evaluation have significantly advanced LifeWorks' mission. "Having dedicated my professional life to LifeWorks and the youth and families we serve, I am profoundly honoured to build on Susan McDowell's legacy as the next CEO of LifeWorks," said Liz Schoenfeld.

Board Support

Kyle Ali, Board Chair, expressed confidence in Liz's leadership: "Dr. Schoenfeld's expertise and leadership have been vital to LifeWorks' success over the last 10 years. She possesses both the deep knowledge and strategic relationships needed to achieve our vision of a community where youth homelessness is rare, brief and non-recurring."

The Board of Governors is confident that Dr. Schoenfeld is the ideal steward of their mission. They look forward to supporting her work and celebrating her accomplishments in the years to come.

Future Plans

In the coming year, LifeWorks plans to commence construction on 120 units of housing at The Works III apartments in East Austin. This project highlights their commitment to creating more stable housing options for youth.
