LEGO Group And Climeworks Forge $2.4 Million Deal For Carbon Emission Reduction

In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, the LEGO Group has announced a partnership with Climeworks, a leading carbon-removal company, involving a $2.4 million agreement. This collaboration is aimed at achieving net-zero carbon emissions through the direct air capture and storage (DAC+S) of CO2. Additionally, KIRKBI, the family-owned holding and investment entity behind the LEGO brand, has committed to a $405,000 long-term agreement with Climeworks for similar carbon removal services.

The LEGO Group's dedication to reducing its carbon footprint is evident in its ambitious goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. A significant part of this commitment involves cutting down emissions across its operations, including factories, offices, stores, and the supply chain. The company has adopted a Science Based Targets initiative-approved plan to lower its absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 37% by 2032. Furthermore, the LEGO Group is focusing on enhancing the sustainability of its products by increasing the use of materials certified according to mass balance principles.

LEGO's $2.4M Deal with Climeworks

Climeworks, renowned for its pioneering role in carbon dioxide removal, launched Orca, the world's first commercial direct air capture and storage plant in Iceland in 2021. The company has plans to inaugurate another facility, named Mammoth, also in Iceland by 2024. Climeworks' innovative DAC technology captures CO2 directly from the air and stores it underground, offering a scalable solution to mitigate climate change.

The partnership between the LEGO Group and Climeworks is a strategic component of the former's comprehensive net-zero program. This program not only focuses on reducing CO2 emissions but also invests in durable and high-quality CO2 removal solutions. Through such initiatives, both companies are setting an example for corporate responsibility and environmental stewardship in the fight against climate change.
