Land Rover Defender Reigns As Most In-Demand New Car On Auto Trader
The automotive market is witnessing a significant shift in consumer preferences, with the Land Rover Defender 110 emerging as the most sought-after brand-new car model on Auto Trader in March. Garnering 6% of all total brand-new car enquiries sent to retailers, the Defender leads the pack. Jaguar Land Rover, the parent company, has further reason to celebrate as both the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport have secured spots in the top 10 list. Collectively, Jaguar Land Rover brands have attracted nearly one-fifth of all enquiries on the platform, showcasing their dominant presence in the market.
Following closely behind is the Volkswagen Golf, which, despite sharing 6% of enquiries with the Defender, boasts significantly more advert views. This indicates a strong consumer interest that extends beyond initial enquiries. The electric vehicle (EV) sector is also making its mark with the Honda e:Ny1 standing out as the only electric car in the top 10 list. A staggering 684% increase in enquiries and a 19% rise in advert views from the previous month highlight its growing popularity. Its affordability, with finance offers below £200 a month, plays a crucial role in attracting buyers.

Affordable electric vehicles are gaining traction among consumers, as evidenced by high enquiry rates for models like the MG MG4 and Peugeot E-208. The trend towards electric mobility is further underscored by seven out of the top 10 most in-demand electric car brands being volume marques. Notably, BYD, a Chinese brand, has seen a significant uptick in both advert views and enquiries on Auto Trader within just six months.
To capitalize on this surge in interest, Auto Trader has initiated a multi-channel marketing campaign in March aimed at promoting new car deals. Targeting its 10 million monthly unique visitors along with its social media followers and subscribers, the campaign seeks to leverage Auto Trader's extensive reach. Ian Plummer, Auto Trader's Commercial Director, commented on the trend, noting that the Land Rover Defender's continued high demand and positive engagement on the platform are indicative of its potential market success.
The automotive industry is at a pivotal juncture with evolving consumer preferences leaning towards both luxury SUVs and affordable electric vehicles. As brands like Jaguar Land Rover and emerging electric vehicle manufacturers vie for consumer attention, platforms like Auto Trader play a crucial role in shaping market dynamics. The data from Auto Trader not only reflects current trends but also hints at future shifts in consumer behaviour towards sustainable and innovative mobility solutions.
