Ishiuchi Miyako To Receive The 2024 Women In Motion Award For Photography

In a significant cultural collaboration, Kering and Les Rencontres d'Arles are set to host a monographic exhibition featuring the works of acclaimed Japanese artist Ishiuchi Miyako. This event, in partnership with Kyotographie, will unfold in the historic Salle Henri-Comte in Arles, marking a special focus on Japan during the festival. Additionally, a group exhibition titled "I'm So Happy You Are Here," spotlighting Japanese women photographers, will grace the Palais de l'Archévêché, curated by Aperture in collaboration with the organizers.

Highlighting the importance of female perspectives in photography, the Women In Motion Award for Photography will be presented to Ishiuchi Miyako on July 2, 2024, at the Théâtre Antique d'Arles. Ishiuchi is celebrated for her poignant work that critiques the objectification of women and delves into Japan's wartime history, emphasizing its impact on women. Her notable projects include "ひろしま/hiroshima" and "Mother's," through which she champions women's autonomy and representation.

The Women In Motion LAB 2024 is set to feature "I'm So Happy You Are Here: Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now," showcasing the works of twenty-five photographers such as Rinko Kawauchi, Yurie Nagashima, and Eiko Yamazawa. This exhibition aims to highlight the contributions of Japanese women photographers to the field, accompanied by a publication edited by Lesley A. Martin and Pauline Vermare.

Further support from Kering extends to the "Transcendence" exhibition by Kyotographie, which includes works by Mayumi Hosokura, Aï Iwane, Mayumi Suzuki, Hideka Tonomura, and Tamaki Yoshida. These artists explore the complexities of Japanese society through their photographic work.

Born in 1947 in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, Ishiuchi Miyako has gained international recognition for her series "Mother's" and "ひろしま/hiroshima." Her work challenges societal norms and explores themes of gender, memory, and culture. Ishiuchi's photographs have been exhibited worldwide and are included in numerous permanent collections.

The Women In Motion program was initiated by Kering in 2015 to celebrate women's achievements in arts and culture. Originally focusing on cinema, it has since broadened to include photography, art, design, choreography, and music. The program aims to inspire change and promote gender equality within the arts sector.

The Rencontres d'Arles is an esteemed annual photography festival that takes place in Arles, France. It presents the work of artists and curators from across the globe, exploring the evolving nature of imagery. The festival's 55th edition is scheduled from July 1 to September 29, 2024, featuring over 130 artists and curators in various heritage sites around the city.
