Composer Jo Kondo Honoured With The 55th Suntory Music Award For His Impact On Music In Japan
The Suntory Foundation for the Arts has recently announced Jo Kondo as the laureate of the prestigious 55th Suntory Music Award. This accolade is bestowed upon individuals or groups who have significantly contributed to the evolution of Western-style music within Japan. Following a rigorous two-stage selection process, the Foundation's Board of Directors unanimously selected Kondo for this honor, accompanied by a prize of ¥7,000,000.
Jo Kondo's influence on both Japanese audiences and musicians has been profound, thanks to his unique compositions and insightful writings. His signature style, known as "linear music," is celebrated for its serene yet distinct outlines, which have become increasingly enlightening over time. The recent Composium 2023 festival, dedicated to Kondo's oeuvre, featured a documentary, orchestral concerts of his compositions, and a masterclass in composition. The festival's success, highlighted by the release of the chamber music recording CD "Jo Kondo: Day and Night," presented an ideal moment to celebrate Kondo's achievements.

Kondo's approach to composition is remarkably straightforward yet profound. He begins with a single note and determines the subsequent note by repeatedly listening to the first. Initially considered overly simplistic amid a plethora of complex compositional techniques, Kondo's work has emerged as enigmatic, calling for a profound reawakening in an era marked by human isolation and the dilution of art by artificial intelligence.
Born in Tokyo in 1947, Jo Kondo graduated from the composition department of Tokyo University of Arts in 1972. His career has included various teaching and residency positions across New York, Canada, London, and the United States. Kondo has delivered lectures on his music at numerous institutions across Europe and North America. With over 180 compositions to his name, ranging from solo pieces to orchestral and electronic works, his music has enjoyed widespread performance and publication.
Kondo's contributions have been recognized through commissions from a wide array of organizations, ensembles, and musicians. His works have been featured at many international music festivals, further solidifying his global influence. Additionally, Kondo is known for hosting NHK radio programs on contemporary music. His illustrious career has been adorned with several awards, including the Otaka Prize and the Nakajima Kenzo Prize.
The recognition of Jo Kondo with the 55th Suntory Music Award underscores his long-standing and significant impact on the development of Western-style music in Japan. Through his innovative compositions and dedication to music education, Kondo has not only shaped the musical landscape in Japan but also inspired countless musicians and composers worldwide.
