Hong Kong Celebrates Jin Yong's Legacy With Centennial Memorial Opening

Hong Kong is currently in the spotlight as it celebrates a significant milestone: the centenary of the birth of Jin Yong, the esteemed Chinese martial arts novelist. The city has inaugurated "A Path to Glory – Jin Yong's Centennial Memorial," an event that marks the first officially sanctioned commemoration of Jin Yong's legacy. Launched on Jin Yong's birthday at Edinburgh Place in Central, this event is a vibrant showcase of Hong Kong's cultural heritage, supported by POTTINGER 22.

The opening ceremony saw the attendance of over 300 distinguished guests, including government officials and luminaries from the creative arts sector. Hon. John KC Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, expressed optimism that the event would draw fans globally, reigniting "Jin Yong fever." Dr. Adrian Cheng Chi-kong, Chairman of the Mega Arts and Cultural Events Committee, emphasized Jin Yong's pivotal role in shaping Hong Kong's cultural industry and voiced hopes for the event to boost tourism and benefit related sectors.

A highlight of the ceremony was the donation of a bronze statue of Jin Yong to the Hong Kong SAR Government. Crafted by sculptor Ren Zhe, this statue will be permanently displayed at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, accessible to the public without charge.

The principal exhibition titled "A Path to Glory – Jin Yong's Centennial Memorial • The World of Wuxia" is set to run from March 15 to July 2, 2024, at Edinburgh Place. It will feature ten sculptures representing Jin Yong's iconic characters and a Mongolian yurt reminiscent of The Eagle-shooting Heroes. Designed to recreate scenes from Jin Yong's novels, this exhibition will offer visitors interactive photo opportunities.

Simultaneously, "A Path to Glory – Jin Yong's Centennial Memorial, Sculpted by Ren Zhe" will be open at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum from March 16 to October 7, 2024. This exhibition will display 22 sculptures of Jin Yong's legendary characters.

Beyond these exhibitions, the event encompasses collaborative displays at public landmarks, various artistic and educational activities, and guided tours for students from underprivileged backgrounds. These initiatives aim to foster cultural and artistic exchanges, educate the youth about Chinese literary classics, and stimulate economic activities and local tourism.

Looking ahead, organizers plan to extend the reach of this event beyond Hong Kong, introducing Jin Yong's cultural treasures to audiences in the Greater Bay Area, Mainland China, and international markets. This ambitious endeavor seeks not only to showcase Chinese culture but also to promote the chivalrous spirit and share compelling stories from Hong Kong with a global audience.
