Jeddah Historic District Launches Luxury Heritage Hotels With UNESCO Status
In a significant move towards cultural preservation and tourism enhancement, Jeddah Historic District has announced the launch of three historic properties in Al Balad, a UNESCO heritage-protected area on the West Coast of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. These properties, named House of Jokhdar, Kedwan, and Al Rayess, have been transformed into luxury hotels, marking a pivotal step in the regeneration of the old town of Al Balad.
The restoration effort is a testament to the commitment to preserving the rich history and culture of the area while introducing modern luxury and comfort. Local historians, artists, carpenters, and architects have played crucial roles in this regeneration process, ensuring that each hotel reflects its original layout and design with a touch of modernity.

House of Jokhdar stands out with its nine light and airy rooms and suites, including the opulent Royal Suite, Dar Neem Suite, and Deluxe Suite. The hotel boasts a stunning roof terrace offering breathtaking views of the historic centre, providing guests with a tranquil escape in the heart of Al Balad's vibrant streets.
Al Rayess features six suites and rooms characterized by their impressively high ceilings that evoke a sense of grandeur. This boutique hotel seamlessly blends tradition with luxury, ensuring guests enjoy modern comforts while being immersed in the area's heritage.
Kedwan offers a unique experience with its blend of heritage and contemporary design across two guestrooms. The property also features multiple living spaces and an exclusive rooftop terrace where guests can relish meals against the backdrop of the Arabian skyline.
Guests staying at any of these properties can enjoy a set menu for lunch and breakfast at a centralised restaurant shared among the three hotels. This dining experience promises to introduce both locals and visitors to delicious local flavours.
Moreover, guests will be greeted with coffee and rose-infused tea upon arrival, setting the tone for a stay that deeply respects and celebrates the local culture. Personalisation is at the heart of the guest experience, from chocolates in their airport transfer to the scent of incense in their room, ensuring a memorable home away from home experience.
Comprehensive Restoration Effort
These three properties are part of a broader initiative to restore a collection of heritage properties within Jeddah Historic District. They represent the first 17 keys to open out of a further 165 keys that will belong to 34 heritage properties slated to open by 2027. Room rates start at 2,200 SAR (approximately £463), excluding breakfast.
For those looking to explore this unique blend of history and luxury, direct flights are available from London Gatwick to Jeddah, taking approximately 5 hours and 50 minutes with Saudia.
This ambitious project not only revitalizes significant historical sites but also contributes to Saudi Arabia's growing tourism sector by offering an unparalleled experience that marries luxury with cultural heritage.
