International Folk Art Market Celebrates Two Decades Of Global Artistry

The International Folk Art Market (IFAM), a beacon for global artisans and traditional art forms, is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary with a grand event at Railyard Park, Santa Fe, from July 11-14, 2024. This milestone event kicks off with a free Community Celebration and Artist Procession at the Railyard Water Tower on July 10, marking the beginning of a four-day celebration that showcases the rich tapestry of global folk art.

Since its inception in 2004, IFAM has been a pivotal platform for over 1,600 master folk artists from 103 countries, playing a crucial role in empowering artists and communities. This year, out of 571 artist applications, 167 artists from 51 countries have been selected to participate, including first-time participants from Papua New Guinea. IFAM's Executive Director, Stacey Edgar, expressed excitement about honoring long-standing participants in the Legacy Tent and exploring the evolution of folk art in the Innovation Tent.

IFAM Marks 20 Years of Global Art

The relocation of IFAM in 2023 to Railyard Park, the heart of Santa Fe’s arts district, has further enriched the market's offerings. Attendees this year can look forward to an array of activities including performances by Grupo TradiSon from La Habana, Cuba, on the AMP stage sponsored by Nusenda Credit Union, international food vendors offering unique culinary experiences, and the IFAM speaker series titled The Eternal Present at SITE Santa Fe.

In alignment with the theme of cyclical and circular time, as viewed by Indigenous cultures, the speaker series curated by Philip Fimmano will delve into topics affecting global artisans. Additionally, Community Day on July 14, sponsored by New Mexico True, will provide free admission for all timed entry tickets, facilitated by a partnership with Rail Runner Express for convenient transportation.

Hank Coleman, Chairman of the IFAM Board, highlighted the ease of access for New Mexico residents and visitors to partake in this unique global experience. The market's significance is underscored by its ranking as #6 on USA Today’s Reader’s Choice Award for Top 10 Art Markets in the United States in 2024. Over two decades, IFAM has grown to become the largest juried folk-art market globally, testament to its impact on preserving and promoting traditional art forms.

Tickets for this landmark event are available at folkartmarket.org/tickets. The International Folk Art Market invites everyone to join in celebrating two decades of artistic excellence and cultural exchange. This year's market not only honors the handmade but also supports artisans as entrepreneurs and agents of positive social change.
