Inditex Pledges €3 Million To Boost South Asia's Largest Environmental Restoration

Spanish fashion giant Inditex has made a significant contribution of €3 million to The Great People's Forest initiative, a project aimed at the restoration and conservation of the Eastern Himalayan region. This area is known for its rich biodiversity, housing one-twelfth of the world's species. The initiative is spearheaded by Conservation International alongside a coalition comprising organizations from Bhutan, India, and Bangladesh. Their ambitious goal includes the planting of one billion trees and the restoration and protection of one million hectares of land. This effort is expected to benefit around one billion individuals dependent on this ecosystem for their livelihood.

The initiative has garnered support from several founding implementing partners such as the Balipara Foundation, Friendship NGO, The Energy and Resources Institute, The Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment, Bhutan Ecological Society, and Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation. Spanning across Northeast India, Bhutan, Nepal, and Bangladesh, the Eastern Himalayan region is a crucial ecological corridor that links glaciers, rivers, and the Sundarbans mangrove forest. Annually, over one million people are displaced due to extreme climate events in this area, with approximately 100,000 hectares of forest being lost.

€3M Inditex Boost for Environment

Inditex's CEO, Óscar García Maceiras, emphasized the company's dedication to biodiversity protection. He announced Inditex's commitment to safeguarding, restoring, or regenerating five million hectares globally by 2030. The initial funding from Inditex will aid in coordinating the initiative's activities with local organizations, bolstering restoration and enterprise projects, supporting scientific research, and establishing an oversight framework grounded in scientific evidence.

This donation is part of a broader partnership between Inditex and Conservation International. Previously, Inditex allocated €15 million to the Regenerative Fund for Nature aimed at promoting regenerative farming and breeding practices. These funds were raised through the sale of paper bags and envelopes. The remaining funds are slated for investment in various environmental projects.

The Great People's Forest initiative represents a critical step towards mitigating climate change impacts in one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. Through such collaborative efforts between corporations like Inditex and conservation organizations, there is a hopeful path forward for preserving our planet's natural heritage for future generations.
