Indian Diaspora Surges To 35.4 Million, Becoming The Largest Global Community
India's diaspora, the largest in the world, numbers 35.4 million people, according to Pabitra Margherita, the Minister of State for External Affairs. This diverse group is split between 15.9 million Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and 19.5 million Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs). NRIs, holding Indian passports, live abroad for work or business, predominantly in the Gulf region, while PIOs have given up their Indian citizenship to become nationals of other countries.
In response to queries from Parliament members about the Indian diaspora's contribution to fostering economic and cultural ties worldwide, Margherita highlighted the significant impact of these communities. He emphasised that the Indian government has recently redefined its interaction with its diaspora, recognising them as crucial partners in India's advancement. The diaspora, through remittances, trade, investments, and cultural exchanges, not only strengthens economic and cultural links but also facilitates the transfer of expertise and knowledge, serving as a vital bridge in India's ongoing development.
Margherita detailed the positive influence of the Indian diaspora, describing them as a cornerstone that supports India's economic and cultural ties across the globe. He mentioned, "The 35.4 million-strong Overseas Indian community is an invaluable partner in the progress of India. The Indian diaspora bolsters economic and cultural connections, among others, by significantly contributing through remittances, trade, investments, cultural exchanges, transfer of expertise and knowledge thereby acting as a bridge to further India's growth."
Concluding his remarks, the Minister underscored the value of a successful, prosperous, and influential diaspora. "A successful, prosperous, and influential diaspora is an asset. India stands to gain a lot from tapping its diaspora networks and productive utilization of the soft power that comes from having such a flourishing diaspora," he stated, pointing out the benefits of leveraging these global networks and the soft power inherent in having a widespread and thriving diaspora community.
This emphasis on the diaspora’s role underlines the strategic importance India places on its global community, not just as citizens or former citizens but as vital contributors to the nation's economic and cultural spheres.
