Toronto Directors Shine At Hot Docs 2024 With World Premieres And Tributes

The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, set in Toronto, is poised to showcase an impressive lineup of documentaries from the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), including two eagerly awaited world premieres. This year's selection underscores the NFB's longstanding tradition of storytelling excellence, featuring a diverse range of topics from LGBTQ+ activism and personal struggles with dieting to the exploration of ancient star knowledge and the impactful journey of a Black trans soul singer.

Among the highlights is "A Mother Apart" by Laurie Townshend, which captures the journey of poet and LGBTQ+ activist Staceyann Chin as she navigates the complexities of motherhood. Another notable entry, "Am I the skinniest person you’ve ever seen?" by Eisha Marjara, offers a deeply personal look into the lives of two sisters embroiled in a dark journey through dieting. "7 Beats Per Minute" by Yuqi Kang presents the compelling story of freediving champion Jessea Lu as she confronts her past traumas.

"Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story" by Michael Mabbott and Lucah Rosenberg-Lee pays tribute to Jackie Shane, a pioneering Black trans soul singer whose life story is both inspiring and moving. "Seguridad" by Tamara Segura explores the filmmaker's tumultuous past and her father's ties to the Cuban Revolution, while "Wilfred Buck" by Lisa Jackson features Cree Elder Wilfred Buck as he imparts ancient star knowledge and spiritual ceremonies. Additionally, a memorial screening for Charles Officer's "Mighty Jerome" will honor the legacy of track and field star Harry Jerome.
