Honda Announces £500,000 Scholarship For HBCU Band Students Via Thurgood Marshall Fund
On April 22, 2024, in Torrance, California, Honda announced a significant contribution to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), earmarking a $500,000 grant to support scholarships for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) engaged in band programs. This initiative is part of Honda's preparation for the 2025 return of the Honda Battle of the Bands, a prestigious event showcasing the talents of HBCU marching bands. A total of 41 HBCU students will benefit from need-based scholarships, receiving up to $10,000 each ($5,000 per semester) for the 2024-2025 academic year to cover average tuition and fees.
Dr. Harry L. Williams, president and CEO of TMCF, expressed gratitude towards Honda for their ongoing partnership and commitment to supporting HBCU students. He highlighted Honda's dedication to empowering students for future success and enhancing their economic opportunities. Yvette Hunsicker, vice president of Corporate Social Responsibility and Inclusion & Diversity at American Honda, also commented on the importance of HBCU band programs in the community and Honda's pride in assisting these dedicated students.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be enrolled full-time as an undergraduate at an HBCU during the 2024-2025 academic year and participate in a university band program. Requirements include a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, having the 2024-2025 FAFSA on file, demonstrating financial need, and being a U.S. citizen or holding valid residency or student visa documentation. Applicants are also required to submit a two-minute video answering an application question. The application period is open until May 17, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. EDT.
Honda's support for HBCUs spans over 35 years, recognizing their vital role in providing higher education and opportunities within the Black community. Through scholarships, programs, and initiatives, Honda has contributed to shaping future Black leaders and has impacted over 300,000 students with more than $14 million in grants. As part of its commitment to fostering sustainable partnerships with HBCUs, Honda is also a member of the HBCU Partnership Challenge and collaborates with TMCF and UNCF to offer annual scholarships for students pursuing education in engineering and related fields.
