Gus Greensmith Targets WRC2 Championship Beginning With Safari Rally Kenya

WRC2 frontrunner Gus Greensmith is set to kick off his 2024 FIA World Rally Championship campaign with high aspirations at the Safari Rally Kenya, happening from 28 to 31 March. The British driver, along with co-driver Jonas Andersson, will be behind the wheel of a Toksport-run Škoda Fabia RS Rally2, marking their first point-scoring opportunity of the season. Greensmith, who finished second in last season's WRC2 championship, is keen to leverage his recent competitive break since the Central European Rally in November to his advantage.

A preparatory regional rally in Spain has readied Greensmith for the unique challenges of gravel rallying, but the Safari Rally Kenya, with its notorious terrain of rocks and mud, presents a distinct set of obstacles. "It's definitely the toughest and roughest rally on the calendar," Greensmith noted, emphasizing the importance of balancing car preservation with speed. This event will be Greensmith's third attempt at mastering the demanding conditions of the Safari Rally.

Greensmith's WRC2 Title Quest Starts in Kenya

Under the Toksport umbrella, Greensmith is joined by Oliver Solberg, who currently leads the championship after a dominant win at Rally Sweden. The competition is fierce with newcomers and seasoned drivers alike vying for top positions. Among them is Nicolas Ciamin, debuting at the Safari Rally in a Hyundai i20 N Rally2, and Charles Munster, also in a similar vehicle. Notable contenders include Poland’s Kajetan Kajetanowicz and Daniel Chwist.

Kenya's local talent is strongly represented as well, with Carl Tundo and Karan Patel among those aiming for podium finishes. Patel, driving an R5-specification Fabia, holds the title of reigning African champion. The Safari Rally Kenya not only tests the endurance and skill of its participants but also highlights the depth of talent across the WRC2 field.

The event promises intense competition and showcases the resilience and strategic prowess required to succeed in one of motorsport's most challenging environments. As drivers navigate through slippery mud and treacherous rocks, their performances at this early stage could set the tone for their championship campaigns.
