GrammaTech Secures $1 Million Prize In DARPA's AI Cyber Challenge

In a significant stride towards enhancing cybersecurity, GrammaTech, Inc., in collaboration with researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Virginia, has been honored as one of the victors in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)’s AI Cyber Challenge’s Small Business Track Competition. This accolade comes amidst a highly competitive selection process, with DARPA receiving numerous submissions from small businesses. The team, named VERSATIL, emerged as one of the top seven, securing $1 million in prize money and a coveted spot in the AIxCC Semifinal Competition (ASC) as a Small Business Track competitor.

The Artificial Intelligence Cyber Challenge (AIxCC), a two-year contest orchestrated by DARPA, calls upon leading AI entities to fortify the software infrastructure critical to modern society. With software’s burgeoning role in daily life, the challenge of safeguarding against malicious cyber threats has never been more pressing. AIxCC aims to catalyze the development of innovative AI systems dedicated to securing vital code, offering a total of $29.5 million in prizes to teams that present the most effective solutions.

GrammaTech Wins $1M DARPA AI Prize

GrammaTech’s entry into this competition is underpinned by its robust history in cybersecurity innovation. Leveraging technology that previously clinched second prize at DARPA’s 2016 Cyber Grand Challenge, along with its commercial successor Proteus, GrammaTech’s approach integrates Large Language Models (LLMs) to enhance vulnerability detection and remediation processes. This system is designed to autonomously identify and rectify vulnerabilities on a large scale, contributing significantly to the Secure-by-Design initiative.

The upcoming AIxCC competitions are set to take place at DEF CON, one of the premier global cybersecurity conferences. The semifinal round is scheduled for DEF CON 2024, with the final showdown occurring at DEF CON 2025. The ultimate victor will be awarded a grand prize of $4 million.

Ray DeMeo, Chief Growth Officer at GrammaTech, expressed pride in the company’s achievement: "This is GrammaTech’s second AI award in the first months of 2024. It reflects the caliber of our team and decades-long reputation for solving the hardest cybersecurity problems." He highlighted how GrammaTech’s blend of talent and technology positions it for further growth in its offerings for vulnerability identification, automated remediation, and securing supply chains across software, firmware, and microelectronics compute stacks—now a critical priority for edge computing information processing and inference.
