Tourism Nears Pre-Pandemic Heights In 2024 Despite New Challenges: WEF Study

International tourism is poised for a robust recovery, reaching pre-pandemic levels in 2024, thanks to the easing of COVID-19 travel restrictions and a surge in demand. A new study by the World Economic Forum, in partnership with the University of Surrey, sheds light on the resurgence of the travel and tourism sector, which is forecasted to significantly contribute to global GDP this year. The findings were detailed in the Travel & Tourism Development Index 2024 (TTDI), analyzing the sectors across 119 countries.

The United States, Spain, Japan, France, and Australia lead the 2024 rankings, showcasing the global scope of the sector's recovery. The Middle East stands out with international tourist arrivals 20% above the 2019 levels, the highest rebound rate globally. Meanwhile, Europe, Africa, and the Americas are also witnessing a strong recovery, with tourism numbers nearing 90% of their pre-pandemic figures in 2023.

Francisco Betti, Head of the Global Industries team at the World Economic Forum, emphasized the pivotal year for the travel and tourism sector, highlighting its role in driving economic and social transformation. The TTDI offers insights for leaders to understand current trends and the future landscape of the sector, aiming for sustainable growth.

Despite the optimistic outlook, the recovery has been uneven across regions. While 71 of the 119 countries studied have improved their scores since 2019, the average index score only marginally exceeds pre-pandemic levels by 0.7%. The industry continues to navigate challenges, including macroeconomic pressures, geopolitical tensions, environmental concerns, and the evolving digital landscape, which includes the integration of big data and artificial intelligence.

The analysis further reveals that high-income economies dominate the top 30 positions in the 2024 index, with 26 of these nations showcasing favorable conditions for travel and tourism development. The United Arab Emirates is the sole Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region country to make the top 30, underscoring its standing in the global tourism landscape. The top ten countries for 2024 feature a mix of European, American, and Asia-Pacific nations, reflecting the diverse appeal and readiness of these destinations to welcome international visitors.

The World Economic Forum's 2024 Global Risks Report accompanies the travel and tourism findings, highlighting potential risks facing the sector. These include geopolitical instability, economic downturns, inflation, and extreme weather events, each posing unique challenges to the continued recovery and growth of global tourism.

As the travel and tourism sector embarks on a path to recovery, the focus on sustainable practices, digital innovation, and addressing labour shortages remains crucial. With the world becoming more interconnected and travel-friendly, the industry's resilience and adaptability will be key to overcoming current challenges and shaping the future of global tourism.
