2024 Global Startup Ecosystem Report Unveils Generative AI Funding Surge Amidst Investment Shifts

The 2024 Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) by Startup Genome and the Global Entrepreneurship Network was launched today at London Tech Week. The report, created in collaboration with the Founders Forum, Informa Tech, and London & Partners, analyses data from over 4.5 million companies across 300+ entrepreneurial innovation ecosystems.

The GSER features rankings that highlight which ecosystems are currently driving innovation and provides deep insights into startup trends worldwide. Key findings include a notable decline in global VC funding, a sharp decrease in Exit Values, a scarcity of IPOs, resilience in Cleantech investments, and a surge in Generative AI funding.

Generative AI Funding Boom in 2024 GSER

Series A funding in 2023 was down 46% from 2022, and the value of large exits ($50M+) fell by 47% over the same period. However, Q1 2024 has projected higher Series A funding amounts and deal counts than Q4 2023.

The number of new unicorns in 2023 decreased by 58% from 2022 and by 87% from the peak in 2021. Silicon Valley led all ecosystems with 15 new unicorns in 2023, though this was an 80% decrease from 2022. More than half of the new unicorns were in the GenAI and Deep Tech sub-sectors.

Late-stage Cleantech startups raised 2.5 times more funding in H2 2023 than in H1 2020. Europe outperformed the U.S. and China in Cleantech Series A funding growth from 2021 to 2023.

Generative AI saw a significant increase in funding, with nearly 20% of all VC funding in 2023 going to GenAI-focused startups. GenAI VC funding tripled in 2023 compared to 2022, with deal counts nearly doubling.

Global Ecosystem Rankings

The Series A funding amount share for Top 40 ranked GSER ecosystems was 65% in 2023, down from 79% in 2019. The share for the Top 100 Emerging Ecosystems reached 19% in 2023 versus 13% in 2019.

Silicon Valley remains at the top of the global ecosystem rankings, followed by New York City and London tied for second place. Europe is the most represented region in the Emerging Ecosystems Ranking, with a 42% share in the Top 100 Emerging Ecosystems, followed by North America with a 27% share.
