Global Knitters Rally For Francis House Easter Chick Appeal, Raising Vital Funds

In a heartwarming display of global solidarity and community spirit, knitters from across the world have rallied in support of Francis House Children’s Hospice's annual Easter Chick Appeal. The Manchester-based hospice was thrilled to receive an overwhelming 35,000 hand-knitted chicks, contributed by individuals from as far afield as Hong Kong, Canada, Australia, and Uganda. This year's appeal saw an impressive turnout, with nearly 900 chicks arriving from Uganda alone. Locally, Maria Dunbobbin from Cheadle stood out by knitting over 1,400 chicks, some adorned with charming bows and googly eyes, including a dozen inspired by Super Mario, much to the delight of fans.

The initiative not only brings together a vast network of knitters but also involves local schools, businesses, and volunteers in a collective effort to support the hospice's crucial services. Filled with chocolate eggs donated by the community, these knitted creations are sold for £2 each across the region. The proceeds are instrumental in funding Francis House's essential care for children and young adults with life-limiting conditions, alongside providing respite and support for their families. This year's appeal is expected to raise more than £55,000.

Knitters Worldwide Support Hospice

Rachel Nasiri, a fundraising officer at Francis House, highlighted the collective effort that makes the Easter Chick Appeal so special. From collecting chocolate eggs to packing and selling the chicks and bunnies, the entire community plays a role in this significant fundraising endeavor. The appeal's success is a testament to the widespread support and goodwill towards the hospice’s mission.

Not all chicks arrive ready for sale; some require a bit of tender loving care. Beryl Wood, an 85-year-old great-grandmother from Denton, took it upon herself to mend over 1,000 chicks with various ailments at the 'chick hospital'. Her dedication exemplifies the community's commitment to supporting Francis House. Meanwhile, volunteers like Cheryl Thompson from Heaton Chapel work tirelessly behind the scenes to prepare orders for delivery.

Corporate volunteers also play a crucial role in this initiative. Teams from Taylor Wimpey Manchester, CHEP UKI, Equilibrium Financial Planning, and AO’s Quality and Compliance team contributed their time and effort to ensure the chicks reached their sales destinations. Their participation underscores the broad-based support for Francis House within the business community.

The funds raised through the Easter Chick Appeal are vital for Francis House as they rely heavily on community contributions to continue their invaluable services. In these challenging times for fundraising, the hospice finds reassurance in the unwavering support from its volunteers and donors. For those interested in purchasing a chick while supplies last, a comprehensive list of over 70 vendors is available online.

Francis House Children’s Hospice plays a critical role in providing care and support to families of children and young adults facing life-limiting and life-threatening conditions.
