Microsoft Software Glitch Triggers Global IT Outage Affecting Banks And Airlines

Major banks, media outlets, airports, and businesses, including the London Stock Exchange (LSEG), have faced disruptions due to a global IT outage. This issue originated from a "defect" in a CrowdStrike update for Microsoft Windows.

The outage has significantly affected digital infrastructure worldwide. Microsoft stated it is investigating the problem and will "continue to take mitigation actions." The IT glitch has already caused widespread issues for Govia Thameslink Railway, which operates several key services around London.

LSEG reported experiencing "a third-party technical issue" affecting some services. However, a spokesperson confirmed that securities trading on the stock exchange remains unaffected. According to Reuters, the outage has hindered company updates from being published through LSEG's Regulatory News Service.

George Kurtz, CEO of CrowdStrike, addressed the situation on X: "CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted. This is not a security incident or cyberattack."

Kurtz added: "The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed. We refer customers to the support portal for the latest updates and will continue to provide complete and continuous updates on our website. We further recommend organizations ensure they're communicating with CrowdStrike representatives through official channels. Our team is fully mobilised to ensure the security and stability of CrowdStrike customers."

Down Detector, a tracking website, noted outages from several companies, including Sky News. The broadcaster displayed an error message indicating transmission failure. Airline passengers globally have faced delays due to airport IT systems being down.

In the UK, most GP surgeries are experiencing system issues, according to the NHS. Mark Lloyd from Axians UK commented: "This outage is a stark reminder of how dependent the world is on cloud services. From productivity tools to critical infrastructure, a large chunk of technology runs on cloud platforms."

"Even the biggest tech giants are not immune to disruptions," Lloyd continued, emphasizing the need for robust redundancy and disaster recovery plans across all sectors.

Al Lakhani, CEO of IDEE, remarked: "Many people might be thanking Microsoft for their accidental day off, but countless businesses are suffering due to Microsoft's and their partners' failure to maintain their services."

Lakhani stressed that this incident highlights the importance of thoroughly researching cybersecurity solutions before implementation.

Wil Jones from Propel Tech noted that such outages impacting vital infrastructure should prompt central governments globally to reconsider their strategies. He warned: "When one vulnerability can have such global ramifications, should a situation like this ever be exploited by a rogue nation-state or terrorist organisation, it could have devastating consequences globally."

This event underscores how crucial cloud services are in today's world. It also highlights that even major tech companies need robust backup plans to handle such disruptions effectively.
