Generali And UNDP Collaborate To Enhance SME Resilience In Southeast Asia
In a significant move towards bolstering the resilience of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Southeast Asia, Italian insurance giant Generali, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has unveiled a comprehensive research initiative. This initiative, encapsulated in the report "Building MSME Resilience in Southeast Asia," sheds light on the myriad challenges MSMEs face, including the impacts of climate change, business disruptions, and constrained access to capital markets. Notably, the report underscores a concerning statistic: less than 5% of MSMEs in the region are insured.
The research advocates for a nuanced approach to enhancing MSME resilience, suggesting a blend of risk management and insurance services tailored to the specific needs of these enterprises. By categorizing MSMEs based on their risk profiles and focusing on key sectors such as natural rubber and electronics, the initiative aims to develop comprehensive solutions that address both risk transfer and mitigation.

Furthermore, Generali and UNDP have introduced the SME Loss Prevention Framework, a digital tool designed to elevate SMEs' awareness and preparedness against climate-related and other unforeseen risks. This framework is poised to offer actionable advice and solutions, empowering SMEs to safeguard their operations against potential adversities.
The collaboration between Generali and UNDP extends beyond research, encompassing practical solutions to enhance SME resilience. At the heart of this effort is the Insurance Innovation Challenge Fund in Malaysia, which supports innovative insurance products with financial backing and technical assistance. This initiative has already identified four promising insurance solutions aimed at fortifying SMEs against climate change and other risks. Selected winners will receive up to US $40,000 each, along with invaluable technical support and access to global networks.
This partnership aligns with Generali's ongoing commitment to supporting SMEs in developing regions and fostering sustainable practices. It builds upon the success of Generali's SME EnterPRIZE project in Europe, now expanding its reach to Asia. The initiative also resonates with the InsuResilience Vision 2025's goal of extending insurance coverage to 500 million vulnerable individuals and safeguarding 150 million people through microinsurance solutions.
Call to Action for Policymakers and SMEs
Generali and UNDP are calling on policymakers to engage more actively with SMEs, directing investments towards resilience-building products and services. Simultaneously, SMEs are encouraged to prioritize adaptability investments, ensuring their business models are robust enough to withstand climate variability and maintain profitability.
The partnership between Generali and UNDP represents a strategic effort to increase insurance access and risk finance solutions for vulnerable communities globally. By leveraging Generali's expertise in insurance alongside UNDP's focus on development financing, this collaboration aims to significantly improve the socioeconomic well-being of vulnerable populations while promoting sustainable development practices across Southeast Asia.
