General Atomics Partners With Emirates Nuclear Energy To Enhance UAE's Nuclear Programs

In a significant development for the nuclear energy sector, General Atomics (GA) and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore joint project opportunities aimed at bolstering the United Arab Emirates (UAE)'s nuclear energy initiatives. This collaboration was formalized during the CERAWeek Conference in Houston, TX, marking a pivotal step towards advancing nuclear technology and sustainability in the region.

The partnership between GA's Electromagnetic Systems group (GA-EMS) and ENEC will delve into a series of discussions focusing on various projects. Among these, the utilization of GA-EMS’ SiGA® cladding for nuclear reactor applications stands out, promising to enhance the safety, efficiency, and affordability of light water reactors. Moreover, this collaboration will explore the potential of Fast Modular Nuclear Reactor designs and other advanced or Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) that leverage high temperatures for improved electricity production efficiency.

New UAE Nuclear Energy Partnership

Scott Forney, president of GA-EMS, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the mutual commitment to innovation and excellence. "We look forward to working with ENEC to develop potential opportunities to fast-track the development of advanced fuels, silicon carbide cladding, and new modular reactor designs to support the UAE’s innovation-driven nuclear energy initiatives," Forney stated. He emphasized ENEC's proven track record in developing nuclear programs and operating reactor systems to the highest standards of safety, quality, and security.

His Excellency Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of ENEC, also shared his optimism about the collaboration. Having successfully developed the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant — the UAE's largest source of clean electricity — ENEC is now keen on forging international partnerships to drive innovation and research in clean energy solutions. "The Barakah Plant is a catalyst for a new era of technological advancement and cooperation on a global level to collectively take us closer to our Net Zero targets," Al Hammadi remarked. He looks forward to identifying areas of potential collaboration with General Atomics to drive progress within the international nuclear energy industry.

This MOU represents a strategic alignment between two leading entities in the nuclear energy sector, aiming to leverage advanced technologies for sustainable energy solutions. Through their combined efforts, GA and ENEC are set to contribute significantly to the UAE's clean energy goals and global efforts towards achieving Net Zero emissions.
