GC Achieves Top 1% In S&P Global ESG Scores, Leading Sustainability In Chemical Sector

BANGKOK, THAILAND - Dr. Kongkrapan Intarajang, CEO and President of PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited or GC, recently announced a significant achievement for the company. GC has been recognized as a leading global sustainable company, securing the top position with the highest score in the S&P Global ESG Score among more than 355 companies in the global chemicals sector. This accolade not only highlights GC's commitment to sustainability but also positions it as a frontrunner in environmental stewardship within the industry.

Under Dr. Intarajang's leadership, GC has embarked on a strategic journey towards becoming a low-carbon organization. The company's ambitious goal is to achieve Net Zero by 2050, in line with the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This strategy is underpinned by three core approaches: efficiency-driven initiatives, portfolio restructuring towards low-carbon businesses, and compensation-driven efforts.

GC Tops ESG Scores in Chemical Industry

In 2023, GC launched 194 energy conservation projects that led to a significant reduction in energy consumption by over 1.84 million gigajoules. These projects are part of the company's efficiency-driven strategy, which focuses on enhancing operational efficiency and increasing the use of renewable energy sources.

From a portfolio perspective, GC is actively restructuring its business model to align with bio-based products and circular economy principles. A testament to this commitment is ENVICCO, Thailand's first high-quality food-grade recycled plastic resin manufacturing plant. Certified by reputable authorities including the Thailand Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (US FDA), and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), ENVICCO is set to reduce plastic waste in Thailand by more than 60,000 tons annually while cutting down greenhouse gas emissions by 75,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.

GC's compensation-driven strategy involves forestation projects for carbon absorption and ecosystem restoration. Over the past decade (2013-present), the company has collaborated with various stakeholders to foster biodiversity conservation through terrestrial and mangrove forestation efforts. These initiatives not only contribute to carbon absorption but also support community livelihood through agricultural productivity.

The company's dedication to operating under Environmental, Social, Governance, and Economic (ESG) principles has facilitated a tangible transition towards sustainability both nationally and globally. GC extends its collaborative efforts across all sectors, emphasizing its role as a global citizen responsible for fostering a sustainable balance for all lives.

"The Sustainability Yearbook" by S&P Global recognizes sustainable companies based on comprehensive assessments. In 2024, over 9,400 companies participated in this evaluation, with only 759 making it to the Yearbook Members list across 62 industry sectors. This ranking is indicative of a company's performance against leading global standards for sustainable development and its adherence to ESG principles. GC's inclusion in this prestigious list and its membership in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) World Index for five consecutive years underscore its commitment to generating sustainable returns for investors and creating long-term value for stakeholders.
