G20 Summit Explores New Models For Sustainable And Socially Equitable Development

Global experts from various sectors will convene in Rio de Janeiro from July 22 to 26 to discuss new development models. Attendees include former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and António Costa, the president-elect of the European Council.

The event, part of the G20 States of the Future side event, aims to address how states can foster a shift towards sustainable and socially just development. The current global scenario presents challenges that require innovative responses and enhanced state capacities.

Keynote Speakers and Panels

The program features keynote speeches and panels in a talk-show format. Notable participants include António Costa, Michelle Bachelet, Denise Ferreira da Silva from New York University, Mariana Mazzucato from University College London, Indigenous leader Ailton Krenak, and Ha-Joon Chang from SOAS University of London.

These panels will explore industrial, economic, and sustainability policy challenges faced by G20 member countries. Discussions will focus on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the role of states in leading necessary changes. Experts will also examine ways to redesign institutions for resilience and agility in the 21st century.

Focus on Global Governance

Another significant topic will be the global governance system. The panels will discuss the roles of state and non-state actors in building desirable futures. This includes exploring proactive strategies for creating resilient states capable of addressing contemporary challenges.

The final two days will feature seminars and social dialogue tables involving national and international experts alongside civil society organisations. These discussions will cover digital transformation, diversity, inclusion, future public service work, and educational transformation.

Technological advances, pandemics, climate change, transnational security threats, and labour market developments are pushing states to adopt more sustainable models. These issues demand rapid action to meet population needs effectively.

The event aims to bring together diverse perspectives on these pressing issues. By fostering dialogue among experts from different fields, it seeks to develop comprehensive strategies for future development.

This gathering underscores the importance of collaboration across sectors to address global challenges. It highlights the need for innovative approaches to governance that can adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.
