French Cyber Consortium To Forge Secure Networks Against Quantum Threats

In an ambitious move to fortify cybersecurity defenses against the potential threats posed by quantum computing, the RESQUE consortium has been established. This consortium is a collaborative effort among six French entities, aiming to pioneer a post-quantum cryptography solution. The members include the technology giant Thales, software developer TheGreenBow, cryptography experts CryptoExperts and CryptoNext Security, alongside the French information system security agency ANSSI and the national research institute Inria.

The initiative seeks to safeguard businesses and local governments from cyberattacks that could be exponentially more damaging with the advent of quantum computing. Quantum processors have the capability to decrypt current encryption algorithms, thereby exposing sensitive data and compromising national security. The project, with a budget of $6 million, is supported by the French government, the European Union's Next Generation EU scheme, and Bpifrance.

Securing Future Networks from Quantum Risks

The RESQUE project will concentrate on developing two key solutions: a hybrid post-quantum virtual private network (VPN) and a high-performance post-quantum hardware security module (HSM). TheGreenBow brings its expertise in VPN and software development to the table. CryptoExperts and CryptoNext Security will enhance the project with their knowledge in encryption and algorithmic cryptography. Thales is set to lead the integration of algorithms, while ANSSI will assess research frameworks and validity criteria for these use cases. Inria's role involves contributing its foundational research in post-quantum cryptography.

Thales stands out as a global leader in advanced technologies, dedicating substantial resources to R&D in fields such as quantum technologies, Edge computing, 6G, and cybersecurity. With around 77,000 employees across 68 countries, Thales reported sales of €17.6 billion in 2022. CryptoExperts aims to bridge the gap between scientific advancements in cryptography and practical security solutions, offering consulting services to enhance security products with the latest cryptographic innovations. CryptoNext Security specializes in developing solutions resistant to quantum computing attacks, providing a suite of software and tools for businesses preparing for the post-quantum era.

TheGreenBow has been at the forefront of VPN solutions since 1998, establishing itself as a significant player in the VPN client market with its products distributed in over 70 countries. Its Windows VPN Client has received certification and is utilized by the French Armed Forces. ANSSI serves as France's authoritative body on cybersecurity and cyberdefense, operating under the Secretary General for Defence and National Security. Inria is renowned for its research and innovation in digital science and technology, working closely with industrial partners.

This collaborative effort underscores a proactive approach to cybersecurity, anticipating the challenges posed by quantum computing. By pooling their expertise and resources, the RESQUE consortium aims to develop robust cryptographic solutions that can secure sensitive data against future quantum threats. This initiative not only highlights the importance of advanced research in cryptography but also demonstrates a commitment to protecting national security interests in an increasingly digital world.
