Freezing Wine To Eggs: Tesco's Guide To Saving Money And Reducing Food Waste

In an innovative move to combat food waste, Tesco has unveiled a series of unconventional tips for preserving perishable items like wine, eggs, and milk by freezing them. This initiative is part of the supermarket giant's commitment to WRAP's Food Waste Action Week, aiming to educate customers on reducing waste and optimizing their weekly grocery expenditure.

While it's common knowledge that bread ends can be frozen for later use, Tesco's latest advice brings to light lesser-known facts about freezing bananas, eggs, yogurts, and even avocados. The guidance doesn't stop there; wine enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the last bit of Merlot need not be discarded as it too can be frozen.

Save Money & Cut Waste by Freezing Food

Here are some of Tesco's top tips for freezing food:

  • Wine: Leftover wine can be poured into ice cube trays or freezer bags for future culinary use, enhancing dishes like gravy and Bolognese with added depth or risottos with a unique twist.
  • Avocados: To prevent avocados from overripening, they can be peeled, chopped, and frozen at their peak condition, ready to be added to smoothies or transformed into guacamole upon defrosting.
  • Milk: Before freezing milk, ensure there is enough space in the container for expansion. Once defrosted, a good shake will reintegrate the milk and fat.
  • Eggs: Eggs can be whisked and frozen in bags or ice cube trays, providing a convenient solution for omelettes and baking needs.
  • Bananas: Freezing ripe bananas whole or in slices offers a quick snack option or an ingredient for thick smoothies.
  • Potatoes: Excess potatoes can be peeled, chopped, blanched, and frozen for future use as roasties.
  • Yogurt: Inserting a lolly stick into mini yogurts before freezing makes for an easy summer treat.

Courtney Pallett, Tesco Campaigns Manager, emphasized the freezer's role in reducing food waste. "Your freezer is your friend when it comes to reducing food waste and avoiding throwing food away. Most of the foods that often end up in the bin such as bananas and avocados can be saved by freezing them to use later. Good food should never go to waste, so we are proud to be sponsoring WRAP’s Food Waste Action Week this year," Pallett stated.

WRAP's research indicates that UK households discard approximately 4.7 million tonnes of edible food annually. Food Waste Action Week serves as WRAP's principal yearly campaign, uniting businesses, government entities, and international partners to equip citizens with the necessary tools to minimize food wastage at home.

Tesco continues to offer further guidance on food preservation and maximizing freezer use through its online platforms, providing resources like "What Food Can You Freeze?" and "10 ways to make the most of your freezer" on Tesco Real Food’s website.

This initiative by Tesco not only aims at reducing food waste but also at helping consumers save money and make environmentally conscious decisions regarding their food consumption habits.
