Alabama Enhances Elder Care With Free Dementia Training Program
In a significant stride towards enhancing dementia care, Second Wind Dreams has announced a notable achievement within Alabama's skilled nursing communities. This initiative, in collaboration with the Alabama Nursing Home Association and the AL CMP Grants Department, has led to 80 skilled nursing communities being awarded the 2024 Bronze level of Empathic Dementia Care Certification. This certification is a direct result of the deployment of The Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT) across the state, an effort aimed at revolutionizing caregiver understanding and empathy towards individuals living with dementia.
The Virtual Dementia Tour is an evidence-based platform designed to alter sensory and physical capabilities temporarily, offering caregivers a unique perspective into the daily experiences of those with dementia. This innovative approach has yielded significant outcomes, including reduced usage of psychoactive medications, fewer acute hospitalizations due to behavioral incidents, and the development of actionable strategies to aid caregivers and families in their support roles.

With an extensive impact reaching over 3 million individuals across healthcare, educational, and community settings, the VDT initiative not only meets but surpasses federal mandates for additional training in memory impairment care. This sets a new benchmark in empathetic and effective dementia care practices.
Currently, there are 50 spots available through the CMP Grant for communities interested in achieving certification. These opportunities are offered on a first-come, first-served basis until September 1, 2024. Communities eager to participate in this transformative program are encouraged to contact [email protected] for more information and to secure their place.
