Ford's Record-Breaking Q1 Sales: Hybrids And EVs Propel Growth Beyond Industry Norms
Ford and Lincoln have reported a notable 7 percent increase in sales during the first quarter of 2024, surpassing the overall industry's performance. This surge is attributed to the rising consumer interest in various vehicle types, including gas, hybrid, and electric models. Notably, Ford achieved its highest quarterly hybrid sales record, with a 42 percent increase, highlighting the growing market demand for more sustainable vehicle options.
The Ford Maverick emerged as the leading hybrid truck for this period, witnessing a remarkable 77 percent rise in sales from the previous year. Overall, Ford successfully sold 38,421 hybrid vehicles in the quarter. The company anticipates this upward trend in hybrid sales to persist as it introduces more versions of the new F-150 hybrid to dealerships.

Starting the year on a high note, Ford established itself as the premier truck manufacturer in the US, dominating both pickup and van categories. The Ford Maverick continued to outperform its competitors, including Toyota's Tacoma, securing its position as America's favorite midsize pickup. Furthermore, the new F-150 experienced a strong quarter with 152,943 units sold.
Ford brand SUVs also saw their best quarter ever, with total sales reaching 216,997 units, marking a 15 percent increase from the previous year. Among these, the Ford Explorer stood out as America's preferred three-row SUV with 58,465 units sold. Meanwhile, Lincoln enjoyed a 31 percent surge in sales during the first quarter, with the all-new Lincoln Nautilus achieving its highest quarterly sales since its launch in 2018.
Electric vehicle (EV) sales for Ford also saw significant growth, with an 86 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This resulted in Ford selling 20,223 electric vehicles in Q1, positioning it as America's second-leading EV brand after Tesla. The Ford Mustang Mach-E and the F-150 Lightning were particularly successful models, with sales up by 77 percent and 80 percent respectively. The Ford E-Transit led as America's top-selling electric van with a staggering 148 percent increase in sales from Q1 of the previous year.
Commercial vehicle sales for Ford also showed positive momentum. Transit van sales rose by 25 percent and overall commercial van sales increased by 19 percent in Q1. The launch of the all-new 2024 Ford Ranger in March further expanded Ford's robust product lineup.
Looking ahead, Ford is optimistic about its growth trajectory with upcoming launches such as the Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and Expedition. Additionally, Ford Pro division's focus on commercial customers is yielding results with an increasing shift towards electric vehicles. Notably, over 40 percent of 2024 F-150 Lightning orders have come from repeat customers, indicating strong brand loyalty and satisfaction among Ford's clientele.
