First York And Equipmake Drive Sustainable Transport With New Electric Bus Fleet

In a significant move towards sustainable urban transportation, UK engineering firm Equipmake has joined forces with First York, deploying a fleet of 12 electric buses in York. These buses, originally Optare Versa single-deck models, have been upgraded with Equipmake's innovative Zero-Emission Drivetrain (ZED) technology. This collaboration marks a pivotal step in First York's ambitious plan to transition to a fully electric bus fleet by 2035.

The ZED technology at the heart of these buses includes a powerful 274kWh battery, ensuring a robust range of 150 miles under various UK weather conditions. This upgrade not only enhances the operational efficiency of the fleet but also significantly contributes to the improvement of air quality in York. Stuart Eyre, Engineering Manager at First York, emphasized the critical role of Equipmake's repower technology in achieving their environmental goals.

Equipmake's ZED technology stands out for its modular and scalable design, suitable for both single and double-decker buses. It encompasses an electric motor, inverter, power electronics, and lithium-ion batteries developed in-house. A notable feature is the thermal management system that optimizes the temperature for the battery pack, motor, and inverter to maximize vehicle range. The buses are designed for overnight recharging at depots using CSS DC charging points.

Repowering existing buses with electric technology offers substantial cost and environmental advantages. The conversion process costs less than half compared to acquiring new electric buses, presenting significant savings for operators who choose to repower buses midway through their operational lifespan. With over two decades of expertise in electric powertrain development and integration, Equipmake positions itself as a leader in high-performance electric motors and EV drivetrains.

First Bus, one of the UK's leading bus operators with over a million daily passenger journeys, is committed to achieving a zero-emission fleet by 2035. By March 2024, the company aims to have 15% of its fleet as Zero Emission Buses (ZEBs). In addition to its environmental initiatives, First Bus enhances customer experience through technologies like Tap On, Tap Off payments and the First Bus app. The company also supports local businesses in their decarbonisation efforts by providing access to charging hubs.

This partnership between Equipmake and First York not only underscores the practical steps being taken towards sustainable urban mobility but also highlights the broader commitment within the UK's transportation sector to reduce carbon emissions. As cities like York lead by example, the path towards cleaner, greener public transport becomes increasingly tangible.
