Eviosys Survey Shows Surge In Sustainable Packaging Demand Across Europe
For the fourth consecutive year, metal packaging specialist Eviosys has commissioned a Europe-wide survey to understand consumer attitudes towards packaging issues. This year's survey also included topics on corporate awareness of sustainability and priorities in packaging decisions. Today, Eviosys reveals the results of its 2024 survey, highlighting a significant shift in European attitudes towards sustainable packaging and material preferences.
The survey, reflecting the views of thousands of consumers and businesses across Europe, underscores a growing consumer awareness of the environmental impact of their packaging choices. An overwhelming 59% of consumers expressed frustration over plastic waste in supermarkets, while 63% view metal as a sustainable alternative.

The findings show that 57% of consumers are willing to pay more for products in sustainable packaging. Additionally, 82% would prefer to purchase a product in metal packaging, given that metal can be infinitely recycled. This preference is driven not only by sustainability but also by evolving consumer values: 70% prioritise reusability and recyclability over luxurious packaging or unique design.
On the business side, the survey reveals a clear industry response to consumer demand, with 90% of companies having invested in researching or implementing sustainable packaging solutions over the past year. However, challenges remain significant, with one-third citing high costs as a major barrier to adopting more sustainable solutions.
Despite these challenges, 98% of companies now recognise the importance of recycling processes and the sustainability of packaging materials. The next step involves engaging with consumers on these topics and fostering shared responsibility throughout the value chain.
"There are only two enduring materials that can be infinitely recycled: glass and metal. All other packaging materials eventually end up as residual waste.
