Erik Goldenstein Clinches 2024 IATA FACE-UP Award For Air Cargo Data Innovation
Hong Kong – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has proudly announced Erik Goldenstein as the winner of the prestigious IATA FACE-UP award for 2024. This accolade is part of a competition designed to spotlight recent university graduates who have introduced innovative and transformative solutions within air transport logistics. Goldenstein earned this recognition through his development of the NE:ONE Play app, which leverages the ONE Record Data Standard to simplify the visualization of complex air cargo data.
The NE:ONE Play app stands out for its ability to allow users to navigate their shipment data with the ease of web browsing. This innovation not only simplifies data overview but also aids organizations in optimizing their operational processes. The award was presented during the World Cargo Symposium (WCS) held in Hong Kong, marking a significant achievement in Goldenstein's career.

Goldenstein, who is currently a research assistant, data scientist, and software engineer at the Fraunhofer IML's Aviation Logistics department located at Frankfurt Airport, is actively engaged in various projects related to aviation digitalization. His work on the NE:ONE Play app has been recognized as a significant contribution towards advancing digitalization in air cargo logistics.
Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo, extended his congratulations to Goldenstein, highlighting the critical role of digitalization in air cargo's future. Sullivan emphasized that the adoption of the ONE Record standard is pivotal for efficient data exchange across the supply chain, and innovations like Goldenstein’s are instrumental in driving this global standard's implementation.
The FACE-UP competition saw a senior panel of judges from across the industry shortlist three finalists, including Goldenstein. These finalists had the opportunity to present their solutions at the WCS closing plenary, where attendees voted for the most impactful innovation. The competition aimed to showcase solutions that demonstrated not only innovation but also the potential to significantly improve air cargo logistics.
Other finalists included Arjan Bhogal, who proposed an innovation aimed at reducing the single-use plastics problem in the air cargo industry, and Niclas Scheiber, who developed a tool for managing complex ONE Record shipment data using advanced query technologies.
The biennial IATA FACE-UP competition is a key component of IATA’s Future Air Cargo Executives (FACE) Program. Launched in 2013, the FACE Program seeks to attract, retain, and develop a diverse pool of young talent poised to become future leaders in the cargo industry. This initiative underscores IATA's commitment to fostering innovation and leadership within the global air cargo sector.
IATA represents approximately 320 airlines, accounting for 83% of global air traffic. The association continues to play a crucial role in supporting airline activity worldwide, promoting industry standards and facilitating critical discussions on the future of air transport.
Erik Goldenstein's achievement in winning the 2024 IATA FACE-UP award not only marks a personal milestone but also signals a promising direction for digital innovation in air cargo logistics. As the industry continues to evolve, initiatives like FACE-UP are essential in recognizing and nurturing the talents that will lead air cargo into a more efficient and sustainable future.
