'Empowering Smart Cities' Book Unveils New Urban Development Model Through CP3
The Partnership for Inclusive Innovation has recently unveiled a groundbreaking publication titled "Empowering Smart Cities through Community-Centred Public Private Partnerships and Innovations." This work, co-edited by Debra Lam, the Partnership's Founding Executive Director, and Andrea Fernández, Managing Director at C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, introduces a novel strategy for urban development. The book is designed to guide policymakers and stakeholders towards effective solutions for the myriad challenges cities face today, including climate change, the digital divide, social injustice, and inequality.
At the heart of "Empowering Smart Cities" is the innovative concept of Community-Centred Public Private Partnerships (CP3). This approach reimagines the traditional framework of public-private cooperation by promoting inclusive partnerships that leverage diverse resources to benefit local communities. The publication features eight case studies from across the globe, illustrating the successful application of CP3 models. These examples demonstrate how shared risk and responsibility among various stakeholders—government entities, researchers, business leaders, policymakers, and citizens—can lead to meaningful urban improvements.

The Partnership itself stands as a prime example of the potential inherent in long-term Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) based on the principles of economic opportunity for all. As urban areas worldwide navigate increasingly complex challenges, the Partnership's model offers a blueprint for creating sustainable alliances aimed at addressing critical societal issues.
"The future of cities depends on collaborative efforts that put the needs and aspirations of local communities first," states Debra Lam. Andrea Fernández adds, "Our case studies underscore the achievements possible when cities establish a clear vision and collaborate with academia, the private sector, and communities to realize their objectives."
For those interested in learning more about this innovative approach to urban development, the authors will host a book launch webinar on June 5, 2024, at 11 a.m. ET. Participants can register for the event here.
