Dongpo: Life In Poems Makes U.S. Debut, Celebrating Chinese Cultural Heritage

In March 2024, the United States will witness a cultural spectacle as the modern musical "Dongpo: Life in Poems" makes its debut. This event, a collaboration between the China Oriental Performing Arts Group Co., Ltd. and the MeiShan Song and Dance Theatre, is set to unfold across eight shows at prestigious venues: the Kennedy Center in DC and David H. Koch Theater at New York City's Lincoln Center. The production aims to offer a deep dive into traditional Chinese culture through innovative storytelling and artistic expression.

The narrative core of "Dongpo: Life in Poems" centers around Su Shi (1037-1101), also known as Su Dongpo. Esteemed as one of China's most accomplished writers and poets, Su Dongpo's legacy extends beyond his literary achievements; he is celebrated for his positive spirit and resilience. His inclusion in France's Le Monde's "Heroes of the Millennium" underscores his global impact. The musical integrates various art forms, including choreography, guqin music, poetry, calligraphy, painting, and carving, to explore Su Dongpo's emotional landscape.

At the creative helm of this ambitious project is Shen Wei, an internationally acclaimed figure known for his multifaceted talent in producing, directing, choreographing, painting, and visual artistry. Shen Wei's approach involves weaving Su Dongpo's poetry into the fabric of the musical's choreography and score, creating a timeless artistic dialogue. The production has undergone 20 months of development and 19 iterations before reaching its final acclaimed form.

The Meishan Sansu Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2018, serves as a backdrop to this story. Housing tens of thousands of cultural relics and documents related to Su Xun and his sons Su Shi and Su Zhe, the temple offers a tangible connection to China's rich literary tradition.

"Dongpo: Life in Poems" distinguishes itself through its stagecraft, aiming to evoke a poetic atmosphere that embodies Su Dongpo's essence without depicting his life directly. This blend of traditional and contemporary elements promises to deliver an unparalleled artistic experience to American audiences.

The production boasts contributions from an impressive roster of artists including Chinese-French composer Chen Qigang, scriptwriter Guo Changhong, lighting designer Xiao Lihe, and Deputy Director of the China Calligraphy Institute Yang Tao. Their collective expertise ensures a performance of exceptional quality across all aspects.

Supported by the "Image China" brand since its inception in 2009, "Dongpo: Life in Poems" is part of a broader effort to showcase Chinese cultural performances internationally. The upcoming U.S. shows are conducted in partnership with the American Dance Festival, highlighting the global appeal of Chinese aesthetics through modern musical storytelling.

As anticipation builds for the debut performances at the Kennedy Center and David H. Koch Theater, audiences are poised to experience the depth and beauty of traditional Chinese culture firsthand. Moreover, plans for "Dongpo: Life in Poems" to tour France and the Hong Kong and Macao regions in 2024 signal an ongoing commitment to cultural exchange. Meishan, Su Dongpo's birthplace, looks forward to leveraging these tours to showcase its rich cultural heritage and scenic beauty on a global stage.
