Digitunity And World Education Services Partner To Bridge Digital Divide For Immigrants, Refugees
In an era where digital access is increasingly recognized as a fundamental right, immigrants and refugees often find themselves on the wrong side of the digital divide. Addressing this critical issue, World Education Services (WES), in collaboration with Digitunity, has launched a significant initiative aimed at bridging this gap. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to enhancing digital equity for underserved communities, marking a significant step towards inclusive technological access.
WES, a non-profit social enterprise with a rich history spanning nearly five decades, has been at the forefront of supporting international students, immigrants, and refugees in North America. Through its philanthropic branch, the Mariam Assefa Fund, WES engages in grantmaking, impact investing, and forming partnerships to foster inclusive economies. The collaboration with Digitunity, a national non-profit organization dedicated to universal computer ownership, emerged from the Mariam Assefa Fund's annual Fund Ambassadors program. Ernest Wurzbach, a Fund Ambassador and WES' Director of Technology Infrastructure, Operations, and Security, played a pivotal role by donating 877 devices to four non-profit organizations across the U.S. and Canada.

The initiative's broader implications are profound. Ashley Taylor, Senior Associate of Partnerships & Strategic Initiatives at WES, emphasized that providing technology access goes beyond connectivity; it's about dismantling systemic barriers that hinder the prosperity of underserved communities. This collaboration not only facilitated technology access but also promoted environmental stewardship by repurposing surplus technology.
Through Digitunity's technology matching platform, the donated devices found new homes with recipients whose needs aligned with WES' objectives. This partnership is set to grow as WES explores further digital equity opportunities within Digitunity's national practitioner network. The success of this initiative serves as a call to action for other organizations to consider technology donations as a means to support digital equity and environmental sustainability.
