Community-Owned Resilience Hub: A New Beacon For Emergency Recovery In West Atlanta

On April 30, a significant step was taken towards enhancing community resilience in the Southeast with the construction launch of a pioneering community-owned resilience hub. This initiative, a collaborative effort involving Groundswell, the Community Church Atlanta, Stryten Energy, InterUrban Solar, the City of Atlanta, the Wells Fargo Foundation, and GM, marks a notable advancement in the region's approach to sustainable community support and emergency preparedness.

The Community Resilience Hub at the Vicars Community Center, situated within the Community Church Atlanta, features a 34.1 kW DC solar installation complemented by 320 kWh of battery storage. This setup is designed to offer a safe haven for community members during emergencies or severe weather events, facilitating effective and safe recovery. Beyond its emergency use, the hub supports the church's ongoing community service efforts, including providing meals to 300-400 families weekly and hosting local organization meetings.

Resilience Hub Boosts West Atlanta

Groundswell's initiative to establish resilience hubs across trusted community locations is a proactive measure against the increasing impacts of climate change. These hubs ensure access to reliable power for essential devices, continuous information flow during emergencies, and safe medication storage sensitive to temperature changes. The Vicars Community Center project benefits from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), utilizing Elective Pay for community ownership and securing a low-income bonus tax credit under Section 48e of the IRA.

Stryten Energy, based in Georgia, plays a crucial role in this project by designing, manufacturing, and installing the battery system that provides up to three days of backup power for critical uses during outages. The resilience hub's ownership by the Community Church is made possible through the collective efforts of church leaders, Groundswell, and financial support from the GM Foundation, Stryten Energy's donation, and the IRA's direct pay solar tax credit provision.

The Wells Fargo Foundation continues to support Groundswell's mission to advance community ownership of resilience hubs through financial models leveraging the IRA's provisions. Additionally, GM Foundation's funding contribution underscores the collaborative spirit driving this project forward. InterUrban Solar leads engineering, procurement, and construction efforts in partnership with SunCatch Energy, ensuring that the resilience hub not only serves as a model for sustainable community support but also as a testament to effective collaboration among diverse stakeholders.

This initiative represents a significant stride towards building resilient communities capable of withstanding and recovering from emergencies. By harnessing solar energy and innovative financial models for community ownership, the Vicars Community Center project sets a new standard for sustainable development and emergency preparedness in the Southeast.
