CliniOps Receives US Patent For Groundbreaking Offline/Online Clinical Trial Data System

In a significant development for the life science industry, CliniOps, Inc., a technology and data science company, has been granted a U.S. patent for its innovative approach to data collection in clinical trials (CTs), especially in remote and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) awarded CliniOps U.S. Patent No. 11,967,402 on April 23, 2024, for a "System and Method for Offline Data Collection and Synchronization for Managing a Clinical Trial." This patent underscores the company's commitment to advancing clinical research through technology.

Avik Kumar Pal, CEO of CliniOps, and Yerramalli Subramaniam, CTO, are credited as the inventors of this pioneering technology. Their solution addresses the critical challenge of collecting and managing data in areas with limited or no internet connectivity. By leveraging mobile devices with complete offline capabilities, CliniOps enables the digital conduct of CTs without excluding participants due to geographical or accessibility barriers.

CliniOps Wins Patent for Clinical Data System

The patented technology facilitates the recruitment and engagement of participants in CTs using user-friendly smart devices for data collection, regardless of electronic connectivity. This innovation is particularly crucial for ensuring that studies are diverse and inclusive of underrepresented populations. It represents a significant leap from traditional paper-based data collection methods to a digital format, enhancing the efficiency and reach of clinical trials.

CliniOps' offline data collection solutions have been deployed in various parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. These solutions support CTs investigating the effectiveness of diagnoses and treatments for public health diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, onchocerciasis, scabies, lymphatic filariasis, HIV/AIDS, and several vaccine, pediatric, maternity, and child health studies.

Yerramalli Subramaniam highlighted the operational benefits of their technology: "In clinical sites, smart tablets can be directly used to capture data on enrollment, medication intake, adverse events, among others. Site staff can enter data even in areas with spotty or no connectivity, which is later synchronized with the backend database when connectivity becomes available." This approach not only ensures the collection of clean data from the outset but also minimizes downstream data-cleaning activities through high-level quality-validation checks performed instantly at the point of care.
