Shougang Qianan To Boost Product Quality With Primetals' Automation Upgrade
In a significant move to enhance its production capabilities, Shougang Qianan, a prominent Chinese steel producer based in Qianan, Hebei province, has embarked on an ambitious project to upgrade the automation systems at its hot-strip mill. This initiative, set to be fully operational by May 2025, is in partnership with Primetals Technologies, a leading force in engineering and plant building for the metals industry.
The collaboration aims to introduce an advanced Level 2 automation system alongside specific enhancements to the existing Level 1 system. This upgrade is anticipated to significantly improve the precision in calculating values during the final rolling and coiling stages, a critical factor for producing high-quality steel used in electrical and automotive applications.

One of the key features of this upgrade is the implementation of a 'shadow mode'. This innovative approach allows the new system to be integrated into the mill's operations while the current system remains active. This strategy not only facilitates a seamless transition but also minimizes downtime during the switchover. The incorporation of self-learning neural networks within the process models is expected to leverage existing process data, ensuring a smooth and efficient upgrade to the new system.
Furthermore, the Comprehensive Temperature Control (CTC) model, a component of the Level 2 automation system, is designed to optimize rolling speed and temperature. By accurately predicting rolling temperatures post-roughing mill and adjusting the finishing mill's speed accordingly, the CTC model aims to enhance overall plant performance.
Shougang Qianan is a subsidiary of Shougang Group and boasts a diverse product portfolio that includes a wide range of cold and hot-rolled steel products. These products cater to various industries such as automotive, pipeline, home appliances, and more, highlighting the company's pivotal role in China's steel production sector.
On the other hand, Primetals Technologies, headquartered in London, UK, stands as a global leader in providing comprehensive solutions for the metals industry. As part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, Primetals Technologies employs approximately 7,000 individuals worldwide. The company's offerings span across integrated electrics and automation, digitalization, environmental solutions, and more, covering every aspect of iron and steel production as well as solutions for nonferrous metals sector.
This strategic partnership between Shougang Qianan and Primetals Technologies not only underscores their commitment to advancing steel production technology but also sets a new standard for operational efficiency and product quality in the industry. With this upgrade, Shougang Qianan is poised to meet the increasing demands for high-quality steel products in various applications, reinforcing its position as a leader in China's steel production landscape.
