Chinese Firms Unveil Genos AI Model To Revolutionise Genomic Research
Chinese biotech company BGI-Research, in collaboration with Zhejiang Lab, has introduced an AI model named "Genos." This model is recognised as the first genomic foundation model globally, boasting 10 billion parameters. It aims to enhance genomic research by analysing sequences of up to one million base pairs with single-base precision.
Despite sequencing 3 billion base pairs in the human genome, understanding each base's function remains challenging. Current AI models often rely on just one or two reference genomes, which limits their ability to represent human genetic diversity fully.

AI Model Genos: A Breakthrough in Genomic Research
Genos tackles this issue by being trained on a diverse set of 636 high-quality "telomere-to-telomere" human genomes. These genomes include samples from various global populations, providing a more comprehensive genetic representation.
The model's capabilities were tested for interpreting mutations that cause diseases. Genos achieved an impressive accuracy rate of 92 percent. When paired with a scientific foundation model, its accuracy increased further to 98.3 percent.
