Bio-Mining Project Launched To Revitalize Chennai's Kodungaiyur Dumpyard
In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, the Greater Chennai Corporation has initiated a project aimed at bio-mining the Kodungaiyur dumpyard, a site that has accumulated a vast amount of waste over decades. This initiative is a collaborative effort led by three reputable firms, including Blue Planet's Zigma Global Environ Solutions Pvt Ltd, which has previously demonstrated its capability in waste reclamation at the Perungudi dump yard in South Chennai. The project is set to address the environmental and public health concerns posed by the 66 lakh cubic meters of garbage accumulated at the site, covering an area of 352 acres in North Chennai.
Blue Planet's Zigma has been awarded 50% of the contract for this transformative project, underscoring its significant role in the bio-mining endeavor. The Kodungaiyur dumpyard currently faces a daily influx of nearly 3,000 tonnes of waste. In response, the Greater Chennai Corporation aims to achieve 100% waste segregation by 2030. This ambitious project is supported by funding from various stakeholders, including the Union Government, the State Government, the Greater Chennai Corporation, and KfW German Bank.

Blue Planet's Zigma Global Environ Solutions stands out as India's largest landfill mining company, having processed over 13 million tons of legacy waste and reclaimed more than 25 dumpsites. This equates to over 600 acres of land that have been restored from their previous status as dumpsites. Zigma's efforts align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and include implementing 24*7 real-time monitoring systems for tracking and ensuring last-mile waste disposal traceability.
Furthermore, Zigma plays a crucial role in India's energy sector as the leading supplier of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), having supplied over 1.5 million tons to cement industries. This contribution not only offers a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel and coal but also significantly aids in reducing CO2 emissions through legacy Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) processing. The utilization of alternative fuels in cement kilns and Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plants is facilitated by this initiative.
The Kodungaiyur bio-mining project stands as a testament to India's commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being. With its innovative approach and ambitious vision, this initiative sets a new benchmark for resilience and sustainable development across the nation. It represents a pivotal step towards addressing long-standing environmental challenges and fostering a sustainable future for the residents of North Chennai.
