Channel 4 Launches Untapped To Invest In Overlooked Entrepreneurs
Channel 4 has unveiled a pioneering initiative named Untapped, focusing on diversifying the entrepreneurial landscape by supporting founders often bypassed by the traditional venture capital ecosystem. This initiative, spearheaded by Channel 4 Ventures, is designed to invest in high-growth businesses led by a more inclusive array of founders. These individuals are identified based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to gender, educational background, socio-economic history, race and ethnicity, geographical location, and employment history.
Untapped is grounded in research indicating that the majority of significant investment opportunities are awarded to founders fitting a narrow, elite profile. To counter this trend, Channel 4 Ventures has developed a new framework to evaluate founders' profiles across diverse criteria. The aim is to allocate a substantial portion of potential investment deals each year to businesses that align with the Untapped initiative. This move not only seeks to generate new revenue streams for Channel 4 but also to foster innovation and develop new consumer propositions within the UK.

The initiative is a key component of Channel 4's Fast Forward strategy, which focuses on transitioning into a digital-first public service streamer. Through investments and incubation of high-growth businesses, Channel 4 Ventures intends to achieve commercial returns while promoting diversity and inclusion within the entrepreneurial sector.
Data analysis underpinning the Untapped initiative highlights the stark lack of diversity among founders who secure large-scale investments. Notably, 94% of founders receiving investments exceeding £100 million are men, with 67% originating from traditional startup or investor backgrounds. In stark contrast, women, individuals educated outside elite institutions, businesses situated beyond the London/Oxford/Cambridge axis, people from ethnically diverse backgrounds, and those outside the conventional startup ecosystem have faced neglect.
Untapped seeks to rectify this imbalance by offering investment opportunities to a wider range of founders. Channel 4 Ventures will utilize self-submitted data from entrepreneurs to identify suitable profiles and conduct annual roadshows across the UK. Partnering businesses will benefit from the transformative impact of TV advertising, leveraging Channel 4 Sales' expertise.
This initiative builds upon Channel 4's ongoing commitment to enhancing representation and inclusivity across various sectors. Previous efforts include initiatives such as Black in Business and the Diversity in Advertising Award. Through continued investment in consumer companies, Channel 4 Ventures aims to contribute significantly to Channel 4's revenue diversification strategy.
