CESI's Solar Cells Contract Boosts Satellites For Wider Internet Coverage
In a significant move that positions Italy as a key player in the global Space Economy, CESI, an Italian group renowned for its technological prowess, has clinched a lucrative contract exceeding one hundred million euros. This five-year agreement with one of the world's leading space systems manufacturers will see CESI supply hundreds of thousands of solar cells. These cells are destined to power American satellites, aiming to extend internet coverage globally, even reaching the most remote areas such as the poles.
Domenico Villani, CEO of CESI, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, "The recent contract signed is not just a sign of our technological competence but also of our ability to be an integral part of ambitious projects." He further emphasized the role of space technologies in enhancing terrestrial applications and improving life on Earth. CESI's readiness to tackle these upcoming challenges reflects its commitment to innovation and excellence in the space sector.

At the heart of CESI's operations are its Milan-based laboratories, where the company has developed proprietary technologies for designing, producing, and testing solar cells. These cells are currently powering over a hundred civilian satellites for clients in twenty-five countries worldwide. Utilizing materials like gallium arsenide and indium gallium phosphide, CESI's solar cells are exceptionally suited for space's demanding conditions, outperforming common terrestrial silicon solar cells.
The company has introduced several innovative technologies, including flexible cells that adapt to satellite surfaces and the Integral Assembly. This novel assembly process enhances cell efficiency while eliminating the need for protective glass, significantly reducing satellite weight and launch costs. These advancements have positioned CESI as a leading manufacturer of space solar cells, with qualifications for both low Earth orbit (LEO) and geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites.
CESI stands out as one of only four global manufacturers in this niche market and is the only entity with complete European control over its products. The significance of space solar cells cannot be overstated; they are vital for converting solar energy into electricity under extreme environmental conditions. Their compact size, light weight, and high efficiency are crucial for minimizing launch costs and maximizing satellite payload capacity. Furthermore, their durability against extreme temperatures and radiation ensures a stable and continuous power supply.
For nearly seven decades, CESI has been at the forefront of offering innovative services in digitalization, testing, engineering, and consultancy across the electrical sector as well as in civil and environmental engineering. With clients in more than 70 countries, CESI's contribution to space applications underscores its role as a global leader in developing advanced solar cells for space applications.
