Canon And RNIB Unveil 'World Unseen' Exhibition For An Inclusive Photographic Experience
In a groundbreaking collaboration, Canon Europe and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) are set to unveil "World Unseen," an innovative photography exhibition at Somerset House, London from 5-7 April. This unique event aims to make photography accessible to everyone, including the blind and partially sighted community, which comprises at least 2.2 billion individuals worldwide. By integrating tactile elements such as elevated prints, audio descriptions, soundscapes, and braille, the exhibition offers a new way to experience the power of photography.
The showcase will feature works by globally acclaimed photographers and Canon ambassadors, including Brent Stirton, Sebastião Salgado, Yagazie Emezi, Samo Vidic, Heidi Rondak, and Muhammed Muheisen. These photographs will be presented in a manner that simulates various visual impairments like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, thereby promoting awareness about accessibility in arts and culture while enhancing the experience for all visitors.

An accompanying video series will highlight the reactions of partially sighted individuals such as Lucy Edwards, a British disability activist, and Menna Fitzpatrick MBE, Britain's most decorated Winter Paralympian. Their stories underscore the exhibition's aim to make the emotive power of photography accessible to a wider audience.
"Photography is an incredibly powerful medium that can push the imagination and we want this experience to be accessible to everyone," stated Pete Morris, Brand and Sponsorship Senior Manager at Canon EMEA. Dave Williams, Inclusive Design Ambassador at RNIB, also expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with Canon in making art more accessible through technology.
Canon has a history of utilizing its PRISMAelevate XL software and Arizona printer series to bring art to life for the blind and partially sighted community by providing tactile printing solutions for art galleries and museums worldwide. This initiative is part of Canon's broader commitment to innovation and accessibility in imaging.
