Boeing Names Kelly Ortberg New CEO Amid Soaring Financial Losses

Boeing has appointed Robert "Kelly" Ortberg as its new CEO following a significant financial loss. The company reported a core operating loss of $1.4 billion in the second quarter, which is more than three times the loss from the previous. Increased scrutiny on the safety and quality of its planes has hindered's ability to produce enough aircraft to return to profitability.

Ortberg, who previously served as CEO of Rockwell Collins, will assume his new role on August 8, replacing Dave Calhoun. Calhoun announced his retirement earlier this year after serving as Boeing's CEO since January 2020 and being a member of its Board of Directors since 2009.

The Board of Directors at Boeing conducted an extensive search process over several months to find the right candidate for the CEO position, according to reports. Steven Mollenkopf, Chair of the Board, stated, "Kelly has the right skills and experience to lead Boeing in its next chapter." He praised Ortberg's reputation for building strong teams and managing complex engineering and manufacturing companies.

Mollenkopf also expressed gratitude towards Calhoun for his leadership during challenging times. "The Board would also like to thank Dave Calhoun for his strong leadership at Boeing," he added.

Ortberg brings over 35 years of aerospace industry experience to Boeing. He began his career in 1983 as an engineer at Texas Instruments before joining Rockwell Collins in 1987. At Rockwell Collins, he held various leadership roles before becoming president and CEO in 2013. He led the company's integration with United Technologies and RTX until retiring from RTX in 2021.

In addition to his professional experience, Ortberg holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Iowa. He has also served on several boards, including those of RTX and Aptiv PLC, a global technology company specializing in vehicle systems architecture.

Ortberg expressed his enthusiasm for joining Boeing, stating, "I'm extremely honored and humbled to join this iconic company." He emphasized his commitment to working with Boeing's more than 170,000 employees to maintain the company's tradition of prioritizing safety and quality.

"There is much work to be done," Ortberg said, highlighting his readiness to begin addressing the challenges ahead. His engineering background is expected to bring a fresh perspective to Boeing's leadership team.

Boeing announced that Ortberg will also serve on its Board of Directors. This dual role aims to ensure cohesive leadership as the company navigates through this critical period in its history.

The aerospace giant faces ongoing challenges related to aircraft safety and production issues. Ortberg's appointment comes at a time when strong leadership is crucial for steering Boeing back toward profitability and restoring confidence among stakeholders.
