Berlinale Meets Fußball: A Unique Fusion Of Film And Football For UEFA EURO 2024
In a unique fusion of cinema and sports, the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, as part of its cultural programme for EURO 2024, spotlighted Germany's young football talent through an innovative event titled "Berlinale Meets Fußball." This initiative saw the world premiere of "Eleven Tomorrows: Berlinale Meets Fußball" at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele on February 21, 2024. The project, under the theme of diversity and inclusion, featured eleven documentary short films about young football teams across Germany.
The films, crafted by students from the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF) under the artistic guidance of Benedetta Films, delve into the lives and aspirations of young footballers. The Berlinale extended an invitation to all participants to attend the premiere, along with a panel discussion and a workshop aimed at fostering mutual understanding and respect among amateur football players and referees. The "Meet the Ref" panel, presented by the Philipp Lahm Stiftung, and the "Film Workshop," led by Sadek Asseily and Julia Hörtel, were significant highlights of the event.

Tim Frohwein from the Philipp Lahm Stiftung praised the "Meet the Ref" panel for its role in facilitating dialogue on respect, cohesion, and tolerance among attendees from diverse backgrounds. Sadek Asseily echoed this sentiment, lauding the film workshop as a vibrant showcase of creativity and teamwork. Following its successful debut in Berlin, "Eleven Tomorrows: Berlinale Meets Fußball" is set to be screened in various clubs' hometowns, with distribution managed by Kurzfilm Agentur Hamburg.
The screening schedule includes presentations at Cinestar in Chemnitz for Athletic Sonnenberg e.V. on April 8, 2024; Cineplex Titania in Berlin for FC Internationale Berlin 1980 e.V. and Türkiyemspor Berlin 1978 e.V. on April 10; Zeise Kinos in Hamburg for K.S. Polonia Hamburg e.V. on April 17; and Kinopolis in Bonn for ISC AlHilal Bonn e.V. on April 27. Additional screenings are planned in Crostwitz for SG Crostwitz 1981 e.V., Feuchtwangen for SV 67 Weinberg e.V., Ingolstadt for FC Ingolstadt 04's inclusion team (football for the blind), and Munich for FC Español München e.V., TSV Maccabi München e.V., and FFC Wacker München 99 e.V.
This collaboration between the Berlin International Film Festival and the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF), supported by Benedetta Films and the Philipp Lahm Stiftung, exemplifies how cultural events like Berlinale can serve as platforms for promoting diversity, inclusion, and mutual respect through the universal language of football.
