Austrian Federal Railways Debuts First New-Generation Railjet Train, Orders 19 Additional Units
The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) has recently unveiled the first of the new generation Railjet trains, manufactured by Siemens Mobility. This inaugural train is set to ply the Vienna-Feldkirch route, bringing with it a host of innovative features designed to enhance passenger experience. Among these are high- and low-floor entrances, six bicycle spaces, three wheelchair spaces, an onboard restaurant, and a mix of compartment and open-plan seating arrangements. The train spans approximately 240 meters in length, excluding the locomotive, and offers 532 seats distributed across two first-class cars, four second-class cars, a multifunctional economy class car, and an economy class driving car.
Originally contracted for eight trains, Siemens Mobility has now received an additional order from ÖBB for 19 more units. These new-generation Railjets are constructed in Vienna and share a platform with the latest Nightjet trains. They boast several high-tech features including lightweight bogies that are 30 percent lighter than their counterparts, enhancing comfort levels. Additionally, the trains are equipped with windows designed to improve mobile phone reception by 33 percent, innovative power distribution systems, and a self-diagnosis system that communicates with the maintenance depot via a secure radio link.

Passenger comfort is at the forefront of the Railjet's design. The interior offers LED lighting, an air conditioning system with a heat pump, and fresh air ventilation that adjusts based on the CO2 levels inside the train. The digitalization efforts extend to a passenger information system displayed on ceiling-mounted screens and WiFi service throughout the train. The seating arrangement includes quiet zones, family zones complete with game board tables, and seats equipped with folding center armrests and three charging options per row. Additionally, passengers benefit from adjustable interior lighting that changes according to the time of day, as well as customizable temperature and color settings for compartments.
The train also prioritizes accessibility and convenience with features such as barrier-free access, secure luggage storage accessible via NFC or numerical codes, designated spaces for wheelchairs, skis, snowboards, and bicycles. The introduction of these new Railjet trains by ÖBB and Siemens Mobility marks a significant step towards enhancing rail travel's appeal through improved passenger experience and sustainability. The order for 19 additional trains underscores the confidence in Siemens Mobility's technology and quality.
