Austria And Nine Countries Call For Ceasefire Amid Gaza Military Operations Expansion

The Austrian Foreign Minister, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, has urged for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. She also called for the unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid and the unconditional release of all hostages. "This horrific conflict must end," she stated. Her comments come amid growing international concern over the escalating situation in the region.

Austria, alongside countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom, as well as the High Representative of the European Union, issued a joint statement. This statement strongly opposed Israel's decision on 8th August to initiate another large-scale military operation in Gaza.

The joint statement highlighted that Israel's actions could worsen Gaza's already dire humanitarian conditions. It warned that these decisions might endanger hostages' lives and increase civilian displacement risks. The statement emphasised that such plans could breach international humanitarian law.

It further noted that any attempts by Israel to annex territory or expand settlements would violate international law. The signatories urged all parties involved and the global community to work towards ending the conflict through a permanent ceasefire and ensuring swift humanitarian aid delivery.

The statement stressed the necessity for Hamas to release all hostages immediately without conditions. It called for their humane treatment and protection from cruelty and humiliation. This demand underscores the urgency of addressing human rights concerns amidst ongoing tensions.

The signatories reiterated their commitment to a negotiated two-state solution as essential for Israelis and Palestinians to coexist peacefully with security and dignity. They believe this framework is crucial for long-term stability in the region.

The joint declaration emphasised that any political resolution based on a two-state model must include disarming Hamas. It also stated that Hamas should be excluded from governance in Gaza, with the Palestinian Authority taking a central role. This approach aims to ensure sustainable peace and governance structures.

The international community continues to watch developments closely, urging diplomatic efforts to resolve this complex situation. The focus remains on achieving peace while addressing humanitarian needs effectively.
