Artel, LLC And US Space Force Complete Initial On-Orbit Test For Pathfinder 2
In a significant development for the United States Space Force (USSF) and its commercial satellite communications (SATCOM) strategy, Pathfinder 2, a collaborative initiative between Artel, LLC and the USSF, has successfully completed its first six months of on-orbit operations. This milestone marks a pivotal shift towards embracing long-term investment opportunities in SATCOM infrastructure, moving away from the traditional reliance on short-term lease agreements.
Pathfinder 2 reached a crucial phase in September 2023 when it accomplished its final contractual milestone, the Initial on-orbit Test (IoT). This achievement was officially accepted by the U.S. Government, signifying the completion of the satellite and transponder's design, testing, launch, and operational phases. Moreover, it ensures the provision of commercial communications Ku-band bandwidth for an extensive period of 15 years.

The mission, awarded to Artel, LLC on November 9, 2017, was executed with the Amazonas Nexus satellite, constructed by Thales Alenia Space and launched to provide coverage across the American continent and the North Atlantic corridor. The primary objective of Pathfinder 2 has been to offer enhanced satellite services and achieve significant cost savings over conventional short-term leasing models.
As part of this mission, the U.S. Government secured commercial capacity for the years 2023-2038, resulting in a remarkable 70% cost reduction compared to previous short-term leasing arrangements. This capacity, owned by the government for the satellite's lifespan, is available for use by the Department of Defense (DoD) or any Federal agency.
Following the successful completion of the IoT milestone, Space Force's Space Delta 8 SATCOM Office has taken charge of planning mission support and managing the Pathfinder 2 capacity for DoD users. The demand for this capacity has been robust and is nearly fully utilized as of February 2024.
The immediate financial benefits of Pathfinder 2 are evident. For instance, General Atomic's MQ-1C transitioned from leasing SATCOM capacity to utilizing Pathfinder 2's services. Similarly, Joint Task Force-North (JTF-N) has experienced significant cost reductions in their SATCOM expenses, dropping from $1.8 million annually to zero.
This initiative has fostered collaboration between commercial SATCOM capabilities and military SATCOM operations, breaking away from the traditionally separate management processes. Despite facing challenges such as the global pandemic and geopolitical tensions in Ukraine, Pathfinder 2 has successfully demonstrated the potential for military-commercial sector collaboration to deliver advanced technologies while conserving taxpayer funds.
Artel, LLC has played a crucial role as the provider of this program. With a history dating back to 1986, Artel has established itself as a reliable provider of secure IT and network solutions to the U.S. Government. The success of Pathfinder 2 underscores Artel's commitment to innovation and cost-efficiency.
The Space Systems Command (SSC), as the USSF's field command responsible for acquiring and delivering resilient warfighting capabilities in space, continues to work closely with joint forces, industry partners, government agencies, and other stakeholders. Their collective efforts aim to accelerate innovation and safeguard the nation's strategic interests in space.
Pathfinder 2 represents a significant stride towards optimizing satellite communications infrastructure for national defense purposes. By leveraging long-term investment opportunities in SATCOM technology, this program not only ensures enhanced operational capabilities but also promises substantial financial savings for government agencies.
