Arla Foods Ingredients To Slash Carbon Emissions Using Heat Pump Technology
In a significant move towards achieving its carbon reduction targets, Arla Foods Ingredients has announced the construction of a state-of-the-art electric heat pump facility at its primary processing plant in Denmark. This EUR 32 million investment marks the company's most substantial commitment to net-zero initiatives thus far. The facility, set to become operational in 2025 at the Danmark Protein site, is designed to convert 2.8MW of electricity into 8MW of heat, thereby facilitating a substantial shift from gas to electric heat production.
This transition is expected to reduce the site's greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 14,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually, which translates to a 17% decrease from levels recorded in 2015. This development is poised to play a crucial role in Arla's ambitious objective to slash CO2 emissions from production by 63% by the year 2030. Furthermore, it aligns with the company's strategy to achieve 100% renewable electricity across its European operations by the end of 2025, representing one of Arla's most significant strides towards a net-zero future.

The decision to invest in this large-scale heat pump facility stems from Arla Foods Ingredients' extensive experience with electrification technology and builds on insights gained from previous, smaller-scale heat pump projects. The innovative system will harness energy from chilled water, which will then be utilized to supply the plant’s 90°C heat distribution network. This network is essential for various processes within the plant, including spray-drying for the production of powdered whey ingredients.
Paul van Rooij, Vice President of Supply Chain at Arla Foods Ingredients, emphasized the importance of sustainable growth amidst increasing global demand for their products. "Efficient electrification and a shift to renewables are central to Arla's commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels," he stated. The introduction of this advanced heat pump technology is expected not only to optimize the company's energy system but also to serve as a model for future projects across other Arla Foods Ingredients sites.
